The Forever Purge, Immigration in America

Okay, here goes from the git go, a guilty confession, I have appreciated and enjoyed the Purge series for the most part, including the television series.  I know some will call me demented for it, but I think it embodies much of quality allegory in story. As in the sense of true and quality science fiction, we see a story that is a commentary, often politically focused on today’s world, and few things in recent years has done that as well as The Purge as we look at themes of violence, prejudice and much more.

In the latest rendition of the story, we have The Forever Purge which looks at attitudes of the extreme right on issues such as immigration. Now note I said extreme right, it is not meant to necessarily be a representation of the entire right, but it is to be intended I believe as a representation of how we look at each other as human beings, especially in our current environment as related to immigration into the United States from Mexico and Central America as through the Southern border.

The premise in The Forever Purge is that in the past a government has come to be that allows for various reasons one night a year for all crime to be legal including murder. Apparently while being taken over in the past, that government has once again gained control, however this time after the 12-hour period of the purge there is a group of organized extremist who seek to bring purity to America and extend the purge, or legal time of crime including murder to extend forever as to bring white purity back to America.  I can tell you from this point on in this review, there will be those who are critical for political reasons, some possibly legitimate, others driven by conspiracy theories.

The Forever Purge is provided some excellent direction by Everardo Gout. There is also a very well told story here with character development. We see characters who change throughout the story from what is perceived as a racist attitude only to come to understand it isn’t racist, it is more of a differing opinion. We also see characters change and of course with a movie like this, as change begins to happen, we also see tragedy with some of those characters.

I was impressed with the movie, more so than I thought, and will say it is better than some of the recent Purge movies. I would go so far as to say that for the times we live, and with the current climate regarding immigration this may be the most thought provoking and best movie of the series. That isn’t to say it is for everyone, it clearly isn’t as it is a violent telling carried out to the extreme that some people apparently have for each other, especially with the immigration issues we see.  It is to say though, that if the purpose of this movie is to create thought and dialog, this is a very well-done movie.

There are questions we need to ask ourselves that are worthy of discussion. What in our belief system is based off stereotype or assumption as opposed to reality? Are we willing to go out of our comfort zone to get to know people who are different?  If we were faced with the same struggle that some in Central America or other countries face, what would we do to be willing to escape to freedom or a better life?  Are we willing to sacrifice our lives to help others out in their need?  What drives our actions and belief system?  While we may not condone murder as is the case in The Purge, do our actions condone the unjust treatment of other human beings?  These are all questions that for people of faith, followers of Jesus, we must ask ourselves, and The Forever Purge certainly provides some assistance in formulating our views on those questions in a serious way.

On a scale from 1 – 10 for the seriousness of this movie and the thought provoking questions it causes us to ponder within ourselves, I give a deserving and thought provoking 7

A Quiet Place Part 2, Coming of Age

One of my favorite films in recent history was A Quiet Place. It was prior to Covid that we begin seeing the advance trailers for A Quiet Place Part 2. With a great deal of excitement I anxiously awaited to see the movie, then Covid shut down the theaters and put on delay many releases, including A Quiet Place Part 2. I recently had the opportunity to finally catch the movie in the theater. I had heard mixed reviews but knew I needed to make up my own mind by actually seeing the movie. The movie was at a disadvantage as I had such high expectations.

First, the entire cast is back and under the direction of John Krasinski who also directed and helped write the original. His wife Emily Blunt is back as Evelyn Abbott and her children played nicely by Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe. Also, which will bring some confusion as this is a sequel and not a prequel is the return of John Krasinski as Evelyn's husband. I won't give much away as this is part of the draw to the film. Also added to this nicely shot, scored, and edited film is Cillian Murphy as Emmett, a critical character to the story.

In a Quiet Place Part 2 we see the continuation of the story in large as to what happens after the first movie. It makes seeing the first movie essential to fully understand and appreciate this film. We see creatures that while blind have an incredible sense of hearing thus, requiring quiet. In Part 2 there is more dialog than the first film but the importance of silence is still a mainstay of the film. Thus, when there is sound, it brings the audience into the story with a measure of perceived fear as at that point we know something is about to happen, we just aren't sure when or how. \

I love the themes carried over from the first film which involves the importance of family and the love family should have for each other but there are other aspects here that are added. We see the importance of overcoming fear and taking on responsibility, as well as the continued story line of a willingness to make sacrifices from others. Even the times when one may not want to make sacrifices but comes to the realization that one often has to take chances and do something seemingly against their nature to help others. We see what it is for a heart that has been turned cold to come back to the place and willingness of serving others. What we see is a story of changed behavior, seeking redemption and purpose in life and in that search, the importance it can have on others.

There are continued lessons of morality and sacrifice here, much like the first, but with different themes. For me, while it is not quite as good as the original, it is still refreshing and worth seeing. In comparisons to the near perfect original, it falls a little short, however, in comparison to other movies as of recent, it still stacks up well.

This is a wonderfully acted and told story. It will have some scares but more importantly cause you to think beyond what you see on screen. It does what good film and in particular good science fiction does. It incorporates elements resembling of Aliens but it goes beyond the original Quiet Place and takes you beyond. Not in a way that takes advantage of the audience, but respects the audience and the times we live in, where the message of hope, love and sacrifice is needed as much as ever.

On a scale of 1 - 10 for the two children old enough to make decisions that make a difference, thus a reminder of each of us doing the same, I take them away and am left with a very enjoyable 8.

Separation Movie Review, Impact of Evil Around Children

My last review was one where I spoke about the disappointing experience of some movies I review. This is one about how a movie you didn't expect much of can have you thinking about and finding yourself loving the writers attempts to tell a story with purpose and meaning, A concept not all see in horror films, but I personally love. Horror films it seems to me can tell a story of pain, suffering, and light conquering darkness better than any genre.

On the surface, Separation comes across as a demonic horror film and in some ways it is, in others, it is much more. This brilliantly directed, scored, and scripted film causes the viewer to think about more than what is presented on screen. It should also cause you to think of societal issues and impact many films, especially in the horror genre present.

With the exception of Brian Cox, who plays Rivers, the grandfather, in law in this movie the cast is largely unknown although there are some good film credits for them. Casting of this nature I believe makes the film more believable as you associate the characters to real people not just actors on screen. The terrific script as well as visual storytelling sucked me into the film. While many critics don't like this movie, I found myself loving about everything about it.

We see early on the parents of young Jenny, played by Violet McGraw begin to let evil into their home. Jenny's father Jeff played nicely by Rupert Friend is a horror, comic book artist who has come upon tough times despite having a successful outing in the past. Over a period of time of working at home, trying to have the next hit comic or story, his wife and he begin to have arguments and ultimately a separation takes place. They have a home keeper who is supposed to be watching Jenny while her father works and the mother is on her day job. Meanwhile the help ends up spending time with Jeff and Jenny plays in the attic and with demonic styled monster toys based off her father's earlier work.

A lot transpires that without a bit of understanding and thought can fly right over the viewers head, although I think it is clearly intended by the filmmakers. I love it when the director and screenwriters bring alive a script that opens up doors to larger and needed conversations and I believe Separation does that.

In separation we see the importance of not introducing dark, scary and demonic activity to children. The filmmakers have to be given credit as those characters, both real actors and I CGI do a great job at presenting horror. So many think these things are innocent and not much more than games. Yet, there is an inherent danger in the ways children think and see things, often times, they may see reality better than we as adults.

The real horror in Separation isn't as much about Demons but instead, I believe, the danger of displaying hate, arguing, and pain around children. We see the impact on a child with things like divorce, greed and the desire to hurt the other party whether it be a husband to wife, or wife to husband. We also see how outside family can be drawn into hate, all while the parent doesn't realize the long term harm they are doing to the child. It's a sad reality that I have seen to often.

As a society where separation often occurs, it isn't to say there aren't reasons for it, it is to say, there is a drastic need to protect the child and without taking that child into consideration, we may do irreversible harm to the long term life of the child.

All of this said, it isn't to place blame or anything of the sort in a broken relationship, it is to say, the innocent around us, especially  children have to become more important than our own desires to satisfy self. Is it possible to place the needs of the innocent, the hurting above our own desires and so called "needs?"

This is a horror movie deserving of an audience. It was sold out on a Tuesday night when I saw it, so maybe it will get that audience.

On a scale of 1-10 I think this was a well made movie that I gladly give a desirable 8 to for the perfection of a movie minus two parents who have lessons to learn. - 8

In The Earth Movie Review

Most of the time I love the movies I am blessed to review them, then at times I'm so liking the movie that I realize, while I'm blessed to do reviews, sometimes it's work. Unfortunately, this review of In The Earth, was work.

Covid is a horrible reminder of 2020. It didn't take long to take it to the movie screen. In The Earth is a movie set in a world where people are wearing masks, has to go through concepts of isolation, contamination control and more. Any of that sound familiar?  Unfortunately the world in the movie is convoluted enough that it becomes difficult to figure out what is going on as scientists explore things around them and try to figure out  in their world and the woods and wilderness that is void of contemporary conveniences.

Starring Joel Fry, Reece Shearsmith, and Hayley Squires we see a group of characters searching for truths related to the virus. Martin and Alma, played by Ellora Torchia working as a team exploring some abnormalities taking place in the wilderness surrounding them. They come upon the character Zach played by Reece Shearsmith who has been overcome by the elements and isolation. His is playing havoc on his psyche.

In The Earth is confusing and I am uncertain what it is trying to address. Using a psychedelic style of filming used in drug culture movies of the 70's we see some bizarre filming styles and special effects as well as story that resembles the drug culture films.

One thing the movie does is it causes us to question the methods we use to care for the earth. Are we doing more harm than good? Clearly Covid and it's origins and the questions that surround it come into play and is an influence on this film. We see attitudes come about that causes some to the extreme. There is little compassion and understanding, and if anything, we see the need to be careful in who we trust as we don't really know the motives behind the actions of some or if they can be trusted or not.

I am reminded of the importance of caring for the earth as expressed in the Bible. The need to show love towards each other, yet to be careful as we don't know what is going on. We need to be reminded that even Satan appears as an angel of light when in reality, he seeks to kill and destroy.

There are parts of this movie that were extremely difficult to watch for various reasons, those seeing it will know what I'm speaking of. It is interesting in many ways, but for me, it fell short. I truly appreciate what I "think" the filmmakers are trying to address, I just don't know for sure what their intent is.

I like leaving a movie feeling like I've been entertained, learned something or it has had some value. Unfortunately, In The Earth didn't just fall short for me, It fell way short. I imagine there are those that would appreciate this style of art film, as for me, I didn't.

On a scale of 1 - 10 for the concept of the third planet from the sun, (the earth which we should care for) I give a disappointing 3.

Jigsaw, 2017

www.thevirtualpew.com
One of the things I often hear is,  "how great it must be to get to do movie reviews." Most of the time that is correct, it is an awesome thing but what a lot of folks don't think about are the times that a part of doing reviews are movies you know prior to sitting down in the theater that you know from the outset you are going to hate and ultimately at the end of the experience after the credits have rolled, you were correct.

The Saw series is a horror series that with exception of the first one, (which I didn't like) I have hated  with all the sequels, prequels and everything else associated with the franchise. I was so excited when I heard they had concluded the series only to recently find out it was all a lie and that for the love of money they resurrected it with the new release of Jigsaw, the character behind the Saw movies who supposedly died in the last feature of Saw.

www.thevirtualpew.com
If I had to point out any aspects of the film that were quite good it would be the sound in the picture. Horror movies have mastered the use of sound as a character to scare the viewer. The use of sound and music to draw upon emotions is a trait many styles of film and directors could learn from.

There were other attributes of this movie that were better than expected. To the surprise of many,  Jigsaw can be seen as a continuation of the television show The Glades. The star of that show, Matt Passamore takes on the character of Logan Nelson in Jigsaw which is a similar role for him. He has either been typecast so plays the same character from one role to another or this is the only kind of role he can play It isn't that he is a bad actor, in some ways he is the best part of Jigsaw which features a decent cast including, Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, Callum Keith Rennie as Detective Halloran and Hannah Emily Anderson as Elanor Bonneville among others. Then again the sound and score is exceptional and the special effects are real enough to make one cringe throughout the movie which has as a feature, torturous deaths.

www.thevirtualpew.comI had to wonder when watching this movie about a few things, one is the desire to see what I would consider violent, gory torture porn portrayed in such a real way that it was hard to watch. I also had to question the viewers in the theater who find humor in this with their literal laugh out loud some have through the most gruesome scenes. What has moved a segment of society to find humor in this type of imagery?

There were other attributes that had me thinking. One of the themes  is the justified judgment of those who seem to deserve to die and be tortured in the process. In some ways Jigsaw is portrayed as a God like character handing out judgment to those who have sinned in a horrible way. It plays on a philosophy of an evil judgmental God. The problem with this is that the character is virtually void of love, redemption or forgiveness of those who have done wrong. I am also reminded though of the words of Jesus who complicated things, teachings such as, "those without sin cast the first stone."  He also said things like "while some talk of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, I tell you to love one another."  Then He went so far as to say, "that if you look at a woman and desire her, you are guilty of adultery," and "if you are angry at someone, then you are guilty of murder."  Under those guidelines, whom of us wouldn't Jigsaw find some justification for killing and torturing?  I would like to see a movie that finds redemptive attributes of at least a few characters, Jigsaw provides none.

www.thevirtualpew.comWe live in a world where it seems as if we are motivated to violence, from politics to religion and from one sporting team to another. Is it any wonder that concepts of civil discourse have been lost and are so desired by some in our world?

Let me make clear if I haven't already, seeing this movie was a job, there was little fun about watching Jigsaw. I don't think I can clarify enough how much I dislike this series.  While it was a tad better than most of the other films in the series, there are far better films to see in my opinion. Unfortunately, this film, during October will do a fair box office and likely make money, otherwise, they wouldn't keep making them. Personally, I wish for a major flop so they would quit making these movies but I don't expect that, I expect profits to keep driving the franchise.  I hope for at least characters deserving of redemption and something positive to come about other than spending time feeling guilty about watching a type of vile, torturous pornography.

On a scale of 1 - 10 while some positives regarding film making, for the 3 letters in the word YUK, I give a lowly not worth it 3

You're Next

Let’s get one issue out of the box, right off the bat, I will admit, I like horror, especially good horror. I will also admit, right of the bat, I don’t like bad horror. Now to clear up another expected misconception, I review film, I hardly endorse it. Some people think I endorse film simply because I review it, wrong! This view irritates me to the max. So, now that I have that off my chest, let me start, a new release I expect to do incredibly well on opening weekend is the release of the new slasher film, You’re Next. I went out with some friends for the advance because it was available to see. I didn’t expect much from the trailers, didn’t really want to see this movie as I am not generally a fan of slasher films but I decided to go anyway. What did I get? Exactly what I expected.

You’re Next starts off with a couple engaging in some rather explicit love making, my inward thoughts, (maybe I said something out loud to my friend Robert who was with me) was; their dead! Don’t they know Rule #1 in all horror movies? No Sex! Now to give you fair and advance warning, there is virtually no way to do a review of this film without giving some spoilers, I will try my best not to do it, but be forewarned. Now, back to Rule #1, opening sequence, involves sex, seemingly for no other reason than to show the sex, by the way, like I said, everyone should know Rule #1 prior to being someplace where there is creepy music (not the soundtrack it was actually quite nice hearing long time favorite Dwight Twilley) but the soundtrack, situation, back in the woods away from everyone else, well, remember Rule #1.

Shortly thereafter we are introduced to a rather strange and large family. We see a mom and dad driving back into the countryside to their seasonal home. While the home is large and isolated they are going there to celebrate 35 years of marriage. There have been some psychological issues but things are looking up for the wife. During the first couple of days there are a few strange occurrences in the house but all the children arrive along with boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives. The family is together and like many families there is conflict and sibling rivalry. Mom and Dad don’t care though; they feel blessed that the family is back together. They sit down for dinner, complete as a family with guests on the first night they are all together. They pray over the meal they are about to eat in an apparent sincere way. One of the boyfriends notices something outside, goes to look and during the midst of an argument between two brothers he is shot through the head with an arrow from a crossbow. Immediately the onslaught starts and a blood fest takes place over the next 90 minutes or so. What happens on screen next may be enough to garnish the favor and awards from film festivals and patrons but I just didn’t enjoy it.

You’re Next is a low budget film and it shows, from the sound to the direction, to the very predictable plot I
wasn’t impressed. The acting at times is okay and the exception is Sharni Vinson the Australian actress who plays the part of the heroine, Erin. She is exceptional at playing a believable heroine who as a strong woman who caries the load not only within the plot of the movie, but in many ways, for the movie itself. Oh yeah I did enjoy the Dwight Twilly songs in the soundtrack even though I heard them, over, and over, and over.

There are themes in You’re Next that I think worthy of discussion, including how it seems that many in our society have a lackluster perspective of the family. While sibling rivalries are to be expected, one has to wonder, has the family unit gone the way of the dinosaur? We see presented here, a mother and father who have gone through some difficulty, from the actions and attitudes of their children one wonders of the contribution the children may have played in the ultimate downfall of this family. Families in general, now don’t sit around the table, don’t play, they compete, fall apart and out of love with each other. While there are evil people involved in this story, the real tragedy is rooted in the lack of and inability of this family to legitimately love and care for each other. It is unfortunately more about the individual than it is the family unit. There is no respect for the parents and what they have gone through in life. While many of the patrons in the half way filled auditorium I saw this film in laughed throughout the movie, I didn’t, I found the movie poorly made but also sad in its themes. Is this what we have come to? Is there no hope for loving families anymore?

For me, outside of the good job done, and the strong female themes played out particularly by Sharni Vinson, I found this movie to be a waste of time and money. While the themes regarding the breakdown of the family are worthy of discussion, I can’t help but wonder, could the family, especially the mother and father, have done a better job at teaching their children about a relationship with God as opposed to just knowing of God? I wondered are we as a society doing any better today. Do we run the risks presented here, not of a bunch of killers with masks killing us off one by one, but instead, of us as families growing a part day by day. There are lessons here not just for the family unit but also this thing called church, which often refers to itself, as a family. It is here, in the not knowing, loving, and sharing in life together that I wonder, are we all experiencing the potential horrors represented in You’re Next?

Due to not really enjoying myself at all, seeing a movie where the themes and plots have been done far better many times before, I unfortunately give this movie a rather distasteful review. On a scale of 1 – 10 for the things three things they were lacking in life, The Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I give a very disheartening 3

The Conjuring, The Battle of Good Vs. Evil

Horror, no other genre of film offends as much as this except for pornography. While the criticism of one is justifiable, that of porn, I have always felt the criticism of the other is not as justified as some think. I have said for years, and still do, no other genre of film portrays the battle of good vs. evil or the power of light over darkness better than Horror. With the release of The Conjuring, we not only have one of the scariest movies in years but possibly the scariest movie ever. It is surprisingly spiritual with a strong emphasis on we overcome evil with God, and God alone. The other startling, statement is the devil exists and he and his demons are out to destroy all that is good.

The Conjuring is presented as a more true than not story.  It is the story of a haunting that took place and according to many still takes place in Harrisville Rhode Island. The movie is the story of the Perron family who lived in the house for approximately 10 years starting in 1970. The experienced haunting in the house shortly after moving in and according to Andrea Perron in her book House of Darkness, House of Light, the day they moved into the house. The events in the house became so severe that they eventually brought in the assistance of the Warren’s played in the film by Vera Farmiga, most recently of the television show Bates Hotel and Patrick Wilson who plays the part of Ed Warren. Farmiga plays the part of Lorraine Warren. The real Lorraine Warren has a brief cameo in the film.

The Warren’s noted for their paranormal investigations over the years, including their investigations in the real Amityville Horror tale are also noted for their faith and belief that ghosts are manifestations of demons. Much like The Amityville Horror there is likely to be controversy surrounding this tale as to what is true and what is not. The producers and Perron family, including the two parents and all 5 children claim the film is true with the exception of a few dramatic licenses. Even in some of those licenses though, there is truth but related to other events with other individuals. The story line is scary, thought provoking and entertaining.

The Conjuring is a well crafted film and one that will easily recover the $12,000,000 it cost to make. The cast is superb. I especially enjoyed the work by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga but the supporting cast all around. There are several things in this movie one needs to pay attention to, especially to understand the excellent craftsmanship by director James Wan. First and foremost I recommend paying attention to the sound and editing. I believe a possible Oscar nomination for editing, it is par excellence. The scare tactics used here are at times expected, other times not, yet they will have you jumping out of your seat, even at times screaming out loud, there are genuine scare moments. The other area regarding sound is an area I want to make sure to mention. I not only suspect an Oscar nomination here, this movie has to presently be a odds on favorite for the award. I have seen few films that use the concepts of sound as powerfully. The Conjuring plays not only on our visual senses but it powerfully plays on our emotions and hearing. Sound is a powerful tool and the use of sound here is as powerful as any movie I have seen. That with a well scripted tale, wonderful use of light and a script that meshes together. This movie not only scares the viewer but entertains them.

This film reeks (in a good way) with spiritual overtones. Many will consider it the scariest movie ever; others will say that it is the scariest movie since The Exorcist. The amazing thing is this movie and The Exorcist both deal with Demonic Possession and both were based on true stories. I personally liked The Conjuring better and that says something for me. There is an even stronger message related to the ability of good to overcome evil, light to penetrate and overcome dark, and ultimately, the ability of God to defeat Satan. Unfortunately, I suspect many people of faith will be as critical of this film as they have been of horror and supernatural themes, including exorcism and demonic possession as they have been in the past. That is a shame, especially with such strong Biblical themes regarding demonic possession, even the son of God, Jesus Christ performing demonic exorcisms along with his disciples. Many people of faith seem to choose to live in a world where they ignore the reality of evil, yet that evil clearly exists. At some point it is in understanding evil and the fear of evil that one becomes best equipped to defeat the evil around them and in the lives of those they love. In real life The Warren’s seemed to understand this and it is portrayed excellently in The Conjuring.

In the battle against evil another perspective presented in a thought provocative way is the reality that when attacking evil, that evil in return will attack not just those attacking it but the families and loved ones of those attacking it. In one poignant scene; Ed Warren is placing crosses around the Parren’s house. He is asked what he is doing and he explains the power of the cross. He also makes a profound statement, the demons and spirits hate it, in fact, “it pisses them off,” so much so that the person(s) attacking the evil forces can expect to be attacked from those “pissed off entities.” We see this come about and it is a powerful reminder of the reality of the forces many face. People of faith who choose to engage in the battle I believe God has called us to in various places in the Bible know this. We need to remember; when the Bible says, “The gates of Hell will not prevail against us,” the implication is that we are on the attack, not sitting back, we aren’t to hide from, stay away from, we are to be on the attack, the bible makes clear, we are not in a battle against flesh and blood but against principalities and darkness. We have many reminders in the Bible including, “That greater is he who is in us than he who is in the world!” While many may choose to stay out of the battle of good and evil, the reality is the battle goes on around us. The other reality is this, we need to prepare, movies like this I believe help those of faith understand the need of preparation and for those without faith, the reality of the evil that exists around us.

For those who read my reviews you know I normally withhold from a lot of spiritual commentary but it is impossible to review a film of this nature without doing so because the message and theme related to spirituality is so strong. I love movies like this when they are well done and The Conjuring is done exceptionally.

There were only a few areas I thought The Conjuring could have been tightened up; a little more character development would have been nice but the movie still worked. For this reason, on a scale of 1 – 10, for the number of letters in conjuring, I give a well deserved; almost perfect 9 for this film. I consider it a must see for all people of faith, seeking truth in spirituality, or even those questioning the reality of evil. Many may not like it for various reasons but it doesn’t change the reality of the spiritual forces around us and the attacks of evil on all of that which is good and from God.

Now from those people of faith who will be critical without seeing the movie, who think all things horror is evil, (except all those horror stories in the scripture) let the criticism not begin, but continue.

ABC's The River, Season One

There is entertaining television, crazy television, educational television, even intelligent television. Unfortunately, if there are cancellations, it seems like the intelligent shows get canceled. I have the unfortunate task of reviewing ABC’s The River, not because it is a bad show but because it was an intelligent show, I liked, that has been canceled after one season. At least this thought provoking, at times supernatural horror series concludes Season 1 in a way that won’t have too many people too upset. There is another hope though for fans of the show; that the DVD itself will be successful enough that at least concepts of the series, whether by story, television, cable or something else, could live on. While I don’t expect it, I can hope. Unfortunately, The River is a show that in my opinion was never given a chance. ABC should have tried different times, days, or something, even giving it another year but as I have mentioned in the past, some of the networks don’t seem to care about the loyal fans that exist.

The River had an intriguing and interesting concept. Dr. Emmet Cole, (Bruce Greenwood) and his family take part in television nature show called The Undiscovered Country. After the show has aired for some time, Dr. Cole decides to go deep into the Amazon to explore some supernatural rumors of the region. He leaves his son, Lincoln, (Joe Anderson) and wife Tess, (Leslie Hope.) He goes off with a film crew and ultimately disappears. Later on some discoveries are made and Tess gets her son Lincoln along with some of the old film crew to help track down and find Dr. Cole. What transpires is a supernatural thriller that at times crossed boundaries for television in the way it is presented. This well told, acted, edited and scripted story includes creators like Orin Peli known for his movie Paranormal Activity and a little known producer some folks have heard about named Steven Spielberg. Unfortunately, this 8 episode, midseason replacement is never given a chance to develop an audience by ABC and as a result, after one shortened season, the series was canceled. That doesn’t prevent this DVD of Season 1 from being worth owning though, not only is it worth owning, it plays and presents itself better than the television version as it ends up playing like a long, entertaining, intelligent supernatural movie.

As The River progresses we see the development of various characters including Dr. Cole who is presented primarily in video segments the rescue crew discovers on his old research boat, The Magus. The ship sits like a ghost ship in the Amazon Basin and it is here the crew gets the ship up and running to search for Dr. Cole. It is here we see the family dynamics start to come into play. There is another dynamic presented as the characters develop trust in some relationships and concern in others. A part of the development schemes does not know the characters or how they are intertwined, if they are intertwined at all. The hand held camera work used in many of the sequences keeps the viewer involved in the story; we develop our opinions about the characters, which constantly change through all 8 episodes. It is a part of the not knowing and having questions about the characters that the series is somewhat unique and intelligent in its portrayal and character development, this is especially true with the Cole Family and other characters such as Captain Kurt Brynildson, a body guard played very nicely by Thomas Kretschmann. While some may make comparisons to other hand held camera programs, this one is unique in the way it involves the viewer in the action and it is done in a way that is much easier to watch than previous efforts.

One of the things that make The River so enticing is the suspense in the program. There is a reality of the supernatural, a question of what are good vs. what is evil and in the process, knowing that terror often comes from things unseen. I especially liked the fact that much of the terror and emotion comes from moments of silence as well as blurred images. One of the things the program does to help this concept out is it uses video interviews to discover the inner feelings of the characters. In the understanding of those characters is the reality that when under certain conditions and situations, how one thinks or reacts and are sometimes totally different. It is in the challenges that one discovers their true selves. Just as the characters don’t fully understand who they are or why they are the way they are, we can see the mirroring of our own discovery. The ability to see the horror of the characters on screen can help one come to the place of recognizing their own needs. It is often after the opening up, discovery and acceptance of self that one can get to the place of helping others. We see that in The River. Just as the Bible talks about it is only when we give up our life that we ultimately gain life, we see the gaining of life in The River. There is also the premise of sacrificing for others. It is the sacrifice for another that one can often see the reality of ones love.

One of the challenges of the series is the way it carries on the debate between faith and science. While Dr. Cole is a man on a search for truth, his rescue crew comes to the place where they recognize the reality of the spiritual by the awareness and recognition of the evil around them. It is through evil that they realize there is more to their existence than initially realized. There are times where they experiment with the evil around them to discover certain truths and those moments lead to bad things. There are consequences to pay for themselves and the innocents around them when they carry out their actions. In this search for love and understanding is another aspect which the viewer can relate to.

I liked The River, the way it is filmed and the way the viewer is brought into the action. There is an excellent story and the lack of imagery in many ways leads to the thrill and excitement we experience. I was not crazy about the special features and while they are offered, even with two commentaries, there just isn’t that much offered other than the film makers having a good time while describing the scenes being played out, specifically in the pilot and closing episodes. While there is an open ended ending, there is still an opportunity for resolve and one will be satisfied. I would have liked to have seen a second and full season and think it would have done well but ABC disagrees. For those who like intelligent thrillers, laced with a touch of the supernatural but with screams that come from the imagination as opposed to on screen antics, this could be for you. You certainly won’t have much to loose with the lower pricing on this 8 episode series. Give it a shot, who knows, with great DVD sales and rentals maybe the fans can be a part of bringing it back in some form or another.
