ABC's GCB on DVD

I am one of those folks who enjoy television since the advent of the DVR and TIVO machines. I am always looking for new shows to check out. My first impression upon seeing advance trailers for ABC’s GCB was quite promising, I thought; “Wow a series with Kristin Chenoweth that deals with life in the church in the South!” Then I started hearing rumblings about the show from within Christian media sources. The GCB originally stood for “Good Christian Bitches,” it was later changed to “Good Christian Belles” and eventually shortened to just GCB. The Christian press tore the show apart; they seemed to make a lot of sense. I got sucked in and decided to boycott and not watch the show. I expressed gratitude when it was eventually cancelled, thinking; “Ha! Goes to show them they shouldn’t mock Christianity!” Then something strange happened, I got the chance to review the DVD prior to release of the first and last season of the show. I then realized how I had been duped and influenced; what I had read, heard and observed was in fact, not true. It was instead, in many ways, another ‘christian’ effort to manipulate and get involved in things with an apparent lack of understanding of the real world, and real world perceptions of Christianity in regards to what was actually going on.

GCB is the story of a young mother and wife from Dallas who lives in Los Angeles. Her husband is involved in a patsy scheme and is killed along with his mistress, (his wife’s best friend) in a car wreck while running away from an apparent investigation involving his crimes. After his death and eventual Federal Investigation and national news reports his wife, Amanda Vaughn, played beautifully by Leslie Bibb moves in with her mother in Dallas, ‘Gigi’ Stopper, played by well respected Annie Potts. Across the street lives an active church and choir member, neighborhood gossip and antagonist, Carlene Cockburn, played to the tee by Kristin Chenoweth. Chenoweth and her husband Ripp, played by David James Elliott noted for his previous role in the television series JAG are extremely wealthy and have their hands in all kinds of financial ventures. These two, along with friends and others are actively involved in their church and in the process haven’t forgotten about the past sins of Amanda. They will stop at nothing to make life for her a living hell. It is here one could also come up with another meaning of the GCB title, one which I think describes the show best, Gossiping Christian Bitches.

This mid-season replacement series only aired 10 episodes, it didn’t take long for the press to mount against this controversial show and prior to the conclusion of the series it was canceled by ABC. I couldn’t help but wonder, how many had cast their judgment on the show based only on the short clips they had seen and on what others had told them about the show, including many in the “Christian’ press?” What I found was quite different than what I had heard or seen.

GCB was actually a very well acted and cast program with a funny, entertaining, yet thought provoking story line. There is a good job, even in a short period of time of having a story line that develops character but also has us thinking. While the church is the single most used set in the film, what happens there isn’t that much different from what I have personally seen and observed in many churches. We see a pastor who clearly loves God and wants to represent the things of God to his church. This is important because it helps detract against much of the criticism of the show. This pastor has a hard time with some in his congregation, yet wants the best for them in his desire to see them actually become Christ like. The show does have Christians who are sincere in their life and example. What many don’t like though is that the show focuses on the hypocrisy of some in the church. The viewer sees this through various choir performances, disingenuous prayers, church programs used for the wrong purposes fund raisers and to the extreme example, a funeral. It was clear in the way the show is edited, narrated and presented that the show isn’t trying to mock Christianity but instead, those who are hypocritical about their beliefs and the way they practice their faith. At the risk of many devaluing me as a person, I found the show in regards to the actions of many to be quite accurate. I have seen these characters many times before but unfortunately, with real people, in real life situations.

I am going to say something again that many will have a hard time with. I want to publicly apologize for basing an opinion on this program prior to seeing it. I have rallied in the past against that type of behavior and yet, I was, drawn into it and am sad to say it. If some are offended by that, they will really be offended by my next comment; I truly wish ABC would reconsider the cancellation of this program because this show, in its satirical, humorous, yet realistic way, had the opportunity to help change these attitudes within many churches. Public awareness and public ridicule of these types of behaviors and hypocritical life styles would help bring awareness to the actions of some through embarrassment more so than most any sermon a pastor could preach. I consider the episodes of this show as mini-sermons, sometimes outlandishly done along with some embellishment, but the point of the programs, normally based on a Bible Verse, were in reality, modern day parables. From episodes like; “Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing,” “Turn the Other Cheek,” “Love is Patient,” and “Pride Comes Before the Fall,” we have numerous sermon illustrations that help drive home the true meaning of those Biblical and Christian concepts. I truly and honestly suspect that many non Christians loved this show because of the humorous way it showed the hypocrisy of many within the church, not from a distasteful perspective of Christianity on the non Christians part, but from an appreciation and understanding of the way many Christians say it is and the way they really act. I also suspect much of the uproar came against the show from many who accept and lifestyle and mannerisms presented. That isn’t to say that all of the criticism comes from these circles, but I can’t help but believe much of it does or did. I still wonder; how much of the criticism came from those who actually saw the show?

There are times GCB goes overboard. I am okay with that as it was still clear to me, the intent of the show was not to mock Christianity, it was to address the unfortunate actions of some of those who claim to be Christian and use the Bible and Church at times to promote their own agenda, in an inappropriate selfish way as opposed to the way they were intended. The product I reviewed, while not a Blu-ray had surprisingly good visual quality, excellent sound, (which was nice for the nice soundtrack included) and a nice array of special features including program commentaries and deleted scenes. There are also other nice features including the making of, the appreciation of Gospel music by the directors and producers and much more. The only thing I didn’t like is that the series ended up being only one season but I blame myself in part for making judgment of something based on the gossip of certain groups prior to actually seeing the show. I am a follower of Jesus, a Christian if you will, I truly wish that many within my faith group could laugh at ourselves or those who represent us and see the potential for good as opposed to the negative. I believe this program could have done good within the church in getting those in the church, including myself, to recognize our faults and moments of hypocrisy. On the issue of hypocrisy, it wouldn’t just help those in the church; it could have been a seed to get all of us, despite our beliefs, to see the negative aspects of gossip and hypocrisy. At this point, we can hope that at least the one season of the program is purchased, rented, downloaded and viewed. Hopefully those who share my faith, who maybe cast judgment on the show, will now through this review give it a chance. It will be interesting to hear what people have to say if they do. As for me, I highly recommend this one. I figure it is like this, it will likely either confirm what you already believe, or convict you to consider your own actions, either way; I see it as a good thing. If you look at this from the perspective of the characters, their lives and actions, and look at the underlying meaning of the story lines, I honestly believe, you will see it much like I have, a program worth  thinking about or if you will, a sermon to learn from and apply to our lives.

ABC's The River, Season One

There is entertaining television, crazy television, educational television, even intelligent television. Unfortunately, if there are cancellations, it seems like the intelligent shows get canceled. I have the unfortunate task of reviewing ABC’s The River, not because it is a bad show but because it was an intelligent show, I liked, that has been canceled after one season. At least this thought provoking, at times supernatural horror series concludes Season 1 in a way that won’t have too many people too upset. There is another hope though for fans of the show; that the DVD itself will be successful enough that at least concepts of the series, whether by story, television, cable or something else, could live on. While I don’t expect it, I can hope. Unfortunately, The River is a show that in my opinion was never given a chance. ABC should have tried different times, days, or something, even giving it another year but as I have mentioned in the past, some of the networks don’t seem to care about the loyal fans that exist.

The River had an intriguing and interesting concept. Dr. Emmet Cole, (Bruce Greenwood) and his family take part in television nature show called The Undiscovered Country. After the show has aired for some time, Dr. Cole decides to go deep into the Amazon to explore some supernatural rumors of the region. He leaves his son, Lincoln, (Joe Anderson) and wife Tess, (Leslie Hope.) He goes off with a film crew and ultimately disappears. Later on some discoveries are made and Tess gets her son Lincoln along with some of the old film crew to help track down and find Dr. Cole. What transpires is a supernatural thriller that at times crossed boundaries for television in the way it is presented. This well told, acted, edited and scripted story includes creators like Orin Peli known for his movie Paranormal Activity and a little known producer some folks have heard about named Steven Spielberg. Unfortunately, this 8 episode, midseason replacement is never given a chance to develop an audience by ABC and as a result, after one shortened season, the series was canceled. That doesn’t prevent this DVD of Season 1 from being worth owning though, not only is it worth owning, it plays and presents itself better than the television version as it ends up playing like a long, entertaining, intelligent supernatural movie.

As The River progresses we see the development of various characters including Dr. Cole who is presented primarily in video segments the rescue crew discovers on his old research boat, The Magus. The ship sits like a ghost ship in the Amazon Basin and it is here the crew gets the ship up and running to search for Dr. Cole. It is here we see the family dynamics start to come into play. There is another dynamic presented as the characters develop trust in some relationships and concern in others. A part of the development schemes does not know the characters or how they are intertwined, if they are intertwined at all. The hand held camera work used in many of the sequences keeps the viewer involved in the story; we develop our opinions about the characters, which constantly change through all 8 episodes. It is a part of the not knowing and having questions about the characters that the series is somewhat unique and intelligent in its portrayal and character development, this is especially true with the Cole Family and other characters such as Captain Kurt Brynildson, a body guard played very nicely by Thomas Kretschmann. While some may make comparisons to other hand held camera programs, this one is unique in the way it involves the viewer in the action and it is done in a way that is much easier to watch than previous efforts.

One of the things that make The River so enticing is the suspense in the program. There is a reality of the supernatural, a question of what are good vs. what is evil and in the process, knowing that terror often comes from things unseen. I especially liked the fact that much of the terror and emotion comes from moments of silence as well as blurred images. One of the things the program does to help this concept out is it uses video interviews to discover the inner feelings of the characters. In the understanding of those characters is the reality that when under certain conditions and situations, how one thinks or reacts and are sometimes totally different. It is in the challenges that one discovers their true selves. Just as the characters don’t fully understand who they are or why they are the way they are, we can see the mirroring of our own discovery. The ability to see the horror of the characters on screen can help one come to the place of recognizing their own needs. It is often after the opening up, discovery and acceptance of self that one can get to the place of helping others. We see that in The River. Just as the Bible talks about it is only when we give up our life that we ultimately gain life, we see the gaining of life in The River. There is also the premise of sacrificing for others. It is the sacrifice for another that one can often see the reality of ones love.

One of the challenges of the series is the way it carries on the debate between faith and science. While Dr. Cole is a man on a search for truth, his rescue crew comes to the place where they recognize the reality of the spiritual by the awareness and recognition of the evil around them. It is through evil that they realize there is more to their existence than initially realized. There are times where they experiment with the evil around them to discover certain truths and those moments lead to bad things. There are consequences to pay for themselves and the innocents around them when they carry out their actions. In this search for love and understanding is another aspect which the viewer can relate to.

I liked The River, the way it is filmed and the way the viewer is brought into the action. There is an excellent story and the lack of imagery in many ways leads to the thrill and excitement we experience. I was not crazy about the special features and while they are offered, even with two commentaries, there just isn’t that much offered other than the film makers having a good time while describing the scenes being played out, specifically in the pilot and closing episodes. While there is an open ended ending, there is still an opportunity for resolve and one will be satisfied. I would have liked to have seen a second and full season and think it would have done well but ABC disagrees. For those who like intelligent thrillers, laced with a touch of the supernatural but with screams that come from the imagination as opposed to on screen antics, this could be for you. You certainly won’t have much to loose with the lower pricing on this 8 episode series. Give it a shot, who knows, with great DVD sales and rentals maybe the fans can be a part of bringing it back in some form or another.

ABC's V Season 2 on Blu-Ray

What happens when a much heralded and praised television series decides to go long on special effects and short on respect from the studio releasing it? It goes the way of V, and turns from one of the most enjoyable shows on television to live a life that turns to disappointment and only 2 seasons of television. The program based on the 1983 miniseries that turned into a television series in 1984 where aliens come to various locations around the world to ultimately take over the human race by intermingling among them as humans until their ploy is ultimately discovered. The series was reinvented in 2009 and 20010. Much like the original series, it unfortunately continues to a place where there is no real ending. It is a shame because this well acted, well conceived program had much promise and I believe the story, although week at parts it would have succeeded if ABC gave it an opportunity, including a consistent time slot and programming hours but as of now, there are no plans to my knowledge to renew the series, in fact if it is renewed, it appears it will be on a network other than ABC as they have officially canceled the series. This isn’t unusual for ABC though; there were no less than 4 shows I really enjoyed this year that went the way of cancellation, all unresolved and open-ended.

The DVD version of the series actually works much better than the television series itself. There are not the interruptions and we know when the next episode will air. It airs when we play it, ABC was so inconsistent in the programming of V it is a wonder it went as far as it did. It had no options but to lose viewers because when tuning in from week to week, one may find anything airing that particular week, except for V.

Technically, this program was fun to watch and the special effects were most of the time on par with theatrical releases. Unfortunately special effects alone won’t carry a television series. I was also pleased with the acting in this program, ranging from the beautiful Alien Mother Anna played by Morena Baccarin, now appearing on Showtimes, Homeland, to the equally beautiful and talented Erica Evans played by Elizabeth Mitchell, noted for her role in Lost. There was also an abundance of other characters in the story line. The real beauty was the science fiction concepts and the special effects. They were on par with most movies and certainly beyond the realm of expectation for a television series.

V takes time to develop the characters. I found myself rooting for some, and wanting justice for others. We follow the exploits of Erica Evans, a single mother who also works for the FBI. Evans suspects and later discovers the plot of the Aliens, led by Anna to destroy the human race, eventually stripping the earth of her nutrients and leaving the human population for dead. Season 2 picks up where season 1 left off, one needs to watch season 1 to fully understand season 2. This is especially so in the understanding of the characters which are developed in season 1. The characters are well developed though and we see and discover the backgrounds of each which helps us understand and appreciate the show even more so.

One of the things I especially appreciated about the program V is its incorporation of contemporary social issues such as nationalism, health care, the role of religion in society and more. It takes on each of these areas in what I believe to be a fair an impartial way. If anything it takes on a position which addresses the need of society to be aware of the political ploys of those in power. There are those who promise things when in reality there is no intent to deliver the things promised. I was reminded of Biblical concepts which warn of such things. We see a beautiful angel of light, which will promise the world, yet in reality, has no desire to do anything more than steal the soul of those it pretends to love. In that intent to do harm is the message of peace, perfect health care, an acceptance of all people, yet in reality, manipulation and greed drive those making the promises. Just like in V, there is a warning that those things which take us away from family and faith, in reality will ultimately destroy us. Just like in the Bible, that enemy comes to devour and destroy. These images along with current events show us V, like all good science fiction was ahead of its time and should have been embraced and supported. This is true especially regarding people of faith as there are so many parallels brought forth in this program that relate to contemporary society.

I liked this series a great deal and the DVD especially the Blu-ray is quite nice in its transfer and provides excellent sound. I was also pleased with the special features offered. While the special features are not the easiest to navigate they are there for the viewing of any fan. While I think the plot weekend somewhat during the 2nd season, it is still good. That said, it is not as weak as some have reported it to be and the DVD of season 2 where one can follow the series helps illustrate that. I would recommend for the fans of science fiction, as well as those who may be a little more conservative in their mind set (the positions V seems to take supports especially more conservative political positions) purchase both season 1 and season 2. See for yourself, and enjoy, this is a series I personally own all V episodes ever produced, from the television show and mini-series of the 1980’s through and complete through the last season on ABC, which should not have been its last.

ABC's No Ordinary Family, Season 1

Imagine a family consisting of a father, mother, son and daughter starting to fall away from each other. Some of us would be used to it as it tends to happen, especially when the children become teenagers and the parents are caught up in their own careers. The family decides to come together, spend some time together and take a trip to South America. Along the way, the plane they are traveling in crashes. They fall into a body of water where they end up breathing in unknown substances from the lake. Unknown to them, they each develop super powers which enable them to do unique things, the father can leap buildings in a single bound and has a new super human strength. The mom can run faster than the speed of light. The daughter can hear the thoughts from others and the son goes from a C student to super genius. If one didn’t know better, they would almost thing No Ordinary Family starring Michael Chiklas from The Shield and The Fantastic Four, and as his wife, Julie Benz, known best for her role as Dexter’s wife in the Showtime series Dexter is based on the Pixar film, The Incredible’s If one doesn’t take the series too seriously they will find a ABC series that deserved more respect and viewership than it received.

One of the benefits of new technological advancements is that a television series like No Ordinary Family can appear almost like a feature film as to the quality of acting, special effects, and story. In those regards this is a pleasing series that deserved another chance to bring in an audience. Michael Chiklas and Julie Benz do a terrific job as does their supporting cast. Everything about the series proved enjoyable, with quality editing, direction, and always entertaining enjoyable story.

I was especially pleased how the story developed. Each character grew into their part, especially true with the children who have their own special powers and issues related to those powers. In some of the same ways as series Smallville, the characters develop in such a way where we find ourselves caring about them and the struggles they are going through. While far from perfect, the issues related to growing up are addressed in a way most can relate to.

At the heart of the series is the desire of the characters to serve their community and those in trouble. While there are sacrifices to be made, those sacrifices take into consideration the role of family and the gifts they have been given. Each character has their own issues and difficulties to face, yet there is a willingness to serve their fellow man. Often times we see individuals in movies make these kinds of decisions, yet never take into consideration the cost of those decisions. That is not the case here, there is a love of family, an understanding of gifts, yet also an understanding of what could be lost when serving others. The difficulty of those types of decisions hits home to me in No Ordinary Family. There is a cost to pay, but ultimately, the need to serve their community and using their gifts for the wellbeing of their fellow humans come at a cost, but a cost that is worth it.

I enjoyed No Ordinary Family. It is a series that deserved a chance for continuation as it was well done, and promoted the family. It promotes more than that though, it promoted the need of each person using their gifts for the good of their community. Those are themes we just don’t have enough of and it was a refreshing program in comparison to all of the other programs on the air. One of the only negatives regarding the DVD series for me was the lack of special features. While there are a few, they are not listed on the product and are not enlightening to the series. ABC unfortunately never gave the series a chance so it doesn’t surprise me that they didn’t put more into the DVD, that isn’t a reflection on the product though, it is a reflection on ABC, there are many fans who wanted more. Watch for yourself, see how the show could have gone places, places we need, and places we deserved.
