Coming 2 America Review, The Power of Family

Coming 2 America is a follow up to the wildly popular Coming to America which was released in 1988. Some 30+ years later Eddie Muphy has returned with Arsenio Hall, Wesley Snipes, James Earl Jones, John Amos and numerous others for the Amazon Prime movie. The new additions to the film, especially Leslie Jones adds to the already fun filled humorous cast.

In Coming 2 America, Eddie Murphy is the soon to be King obtains the throne from his father played by James Earl Jones. As he discovers that the country of Zumunda has a tradition of the throne to be handed down to a son. While he now has three daughters, he doesn't have a son. This has him at odds with his rival, General Izzi played by Wesley Snipes who has threatened to take the nation by force. Eddie Murphy's character, King Akeem finds out that he has a son that was conceived during the time he was in America. His son, as he discovers later, Lavelle has a mother played by Leslie Jones, who is great, and an uncle, a street shyster played by Tracy Morgan. The family returns to Zumundu and thus a the humor.

One of the things many need to get used to is the new criticism and cancel culture that has come about by many in the Gen Z population. There is already some criticism of Murphy and the American actors taking on a role that has them pretending to be African. It's acting, we can't cancel everything we don't like but that is a whole other pet peeve. I just wanted to address that point from the start and get it out of the way.

This is one of those movies where we shouldn't expect a great movie, it is intended to bring laughs but while some may be critical of streaming networks like Amazon or Netflix doing movies, this is an example of how they are doing good movies in many cases. It would have been fun to see this one on a big screen as the quality of sets, action, editing, sound and so forth are as good as anything on the big screen. The cast for a comedy in particular is outstanding. While there are some weak moments in the acting it is still quite enjoyable.

I especially enjoyed the concept of discovering family. We see bridges being developed among the characters. For example we see Eddie Murphy's character and family have to accept and come to relate with their new family whom they knew nothing about. While King Akeem's one night stand with Mary, played by Jones, was just that a one night stand, King Akeem takes on th responsibility of bringing his son back and being responsible. Of course one wonders if his intentions are pure, but as the movie plays out that question is answered. We the viewer see the strength of family, coming together, forgiveness and what real love can look like among families.

We may be approaching a time in movies where the healing of broken relationships is a prominent theme and if that is the case, it's a good thing. We are at a time when healing and acceptance needs to occur. In this movie, in a fun way, (I laughed all through the movie,) we see this take place with the characters and despite their differences we see the power of family.

I've got some friends who I've heard from and seen on social media that didn't like this movie, but, the majority of those that stick with it did. I loved it for what it is and believe that humor has a unique way of tearing down walls and causing people to think. I think the themes addressed are vital for today's world.

On a scale of 1 - 10 and the concept of coming together, for the letters it takes to spell together, I give it a very enjoyable 8.

You're Next

Let’s get one issue out of the box, right off the bat, I will admit, I like horror, especially good horror. I will also admit, right of the bat, I don’t like bad horror. Now to clear up another expected misconception, I review film, I hardly endorse it. Some people think I endorse film simply because I review it, wrong! This view irritates me to the max. So, now that I have that off my chest, let me start, a new release I expect to do incredibly well on opening weekend is the release of the new slasher film, You’re Next. I went out with some friends for the advance because it was available to see. I didn’t expect much from the trailers, didn’t really want to see this movie as I am not generally a fan of slasher films but I decided to go anyway. What did I get? Exactly what I expected.

You’re Next starts off with a couple engaging in some rather explicit love making, my inward thoughts, (maybe I said something out loud to my friend Robert who was with me) was; their dead! Don’t they know Rule #1 in all horror movies? No Sex! Now to give you fair and advance warning, there is virtually no way to do a review of this film without giving some spoilers, I will try my best not to do it, but be forewarned. Now, back to Rule #1, opening sequence, involves sex, seemingly for no other reason than to show the sex, by the way, like I said, everyone should know Rule #1 prior to being someplace where there is creepy music (not the soundtrack it was actually quite nice hearing long time favorite Dwight Twilley) but the soundtrack, situation, back in the woods away from everyone else, well, remember Rule #1.

Shortly thereafter we are introduced to a rather strange and large family. We see a mom and dad driving back into the countryside to their seasonal home. While the home is large and isolated they are going there to celebrate 35 years of marriage. There have been some psychological issues but things are looking up for the wife. During the first couple of days there are a few strange occurrences in the house but all the children arrive along with boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands and wives. The family is together and like many families there is conflict and sibling rivalry. Mom and Dad don’t care though; they feel blessed that the family is back together. They sit down for dinner, complete as a family with guests on the first night they are all together. They pray over the meal they are about to eat in an apparent sincere way. One of the boyfriends notices something outside, goes to look and during the midst of an argument between two brothers he is shot through the head with an arrow from a crossbow. Immediately the onslaught starts and a blood fest takes place over the next 90 minutes or so. What happens on screen next may be enough to garnish the favor and awards from film festivals and patrons but I just didn’t enjoy it.

You’re Next is a low budget film and it shows, from the sound to the direction, to the very predictable plot I
wasn’t impressed. The acting at times is okay and the exception is Sharni Vinson the Australian actress who plays the part of the heroine, Erin. She is exceptional at playing a believable heroine who as a strong woman who caries the load not only within the plot of the movie, but in many ways, for the movie itself. Oh yeah I did enjoy the Dwight Twilly songs in the soundtrack even though I heard them, over, and over, and over.

There are themes in You’re Next that I think worthy of discussion, including how it seems that many in our society have a lackluster perspective of the family. While sibling rivalries are to be expected, one has to wonder, has the family unit gone the way of the dinosaur? We see presented here, a mother and father who have gone through some difficulty, from the actions and attitudes of their children one wonders of the contribution the children may have played in the ultimate downfall of this family. Families in general, now don’t sit around the table, don’t play, they compete, fall apart and out of love with each other. While there are evil people involved in this story, the real tragedy is rooted in the lack of and inability of this family to legitimately love and care for each other. It is unfortunately more about the individual than it is the family unit. There is no respect for the parents and what they have gone through in life. While many of the patrons in the half way filled auditorium I saw this film in laughed throughout the movie, I didn’t, I found the movie poorly made but also sad in its themes. Is this what we have come to? Is there no hope for loving families anymore?

For me, outside of the good job done, and the strong female themes played out particularly by Sharni Vinson, I found this movie to be a waste of time and money. While the themes regarding the breakdown of the family are worthy of discussion, I can’t help but wonder, could the family, especially the mother and father, have done a better job at teaching their children about a relationship with God as opposed to just knowing of God? I wondered are we as a society doing any better today. Do we run the risks presented here, not of a bunch of killers with masks killing us off one by one, but instead, of us as families growing a part day by day. There are lessons here not just for the family unit but also this thing called church, which often refers to itself, as a family. It is here, in the not knowing, loving, and sharing in life together that I wonder, are we all experiencing the potential horrors represented in You’re Next?

Due to not really enjoying myself at all, seeing a movie where the themes and plots have been done far better many times before, I unfortunately give this movie a rather distasteful review. On a scale of 1 – 10 for the things three things they were lacking in life, The Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I give a very disheartening 3

HBO's Entourage Season 8 on Blu-Ray DVD

There are unfortunately, many bad television shows, there are pleasantly though, a few surprises that provide exceptional television, such is the case for HBO’s Entourage, unfortunately, Season 8 is the series last. Fans of the show now have the opportunity to own the final season on Blu-ray. The series follows the entourage providing protection, leadership, guidance, but more importantly friendship for fictional film star Vincent Chase, played wonderfully by Adrian Grenier. The show features an ensemble cast presenting real life scenarios of what it is like for a star living in Hollywood. Over the course of 8 years the show has taken its characters from inappropriate and dangerous sexual escapades to drugs and from pride and bitterness to a rekindling of friendship and brotherhood. Every great show deserves to have a great ending, and Entourage hasn’t forgotten its obligation to provide fans a fitting ending. A favorite among many in the entertainment industry, they do just that, provide a great closing season.

If I have said this once, I have said it at least 10 other times but if you are looking for quality entertaining programs, in all capacities, check out the series on some of the premium television stations. From Showtime to HBO there is some exceptional programming. HBO has once again, provided an almost perfect television series, the only negative I can find is there just aren’t enough episodes in a season. HBO has a unique ability of creating programming that one wants to see carry on. The storytelling, scripting, editing, sound, costuming and everything that goes into making a quality movie, is used to provide exceptional television. Outside of wanting more, I simply can’t find anything technically to complain about this program.

Over the last 8 seasons Entourage has taken us down the road of getting to know its characters. This season we have a number of things that happen as the season comes to a close. As a part of the conclusion of the series we see what happens to each of the characters but we also see and are reminded of their love for each other, even in tough times. To fully appreciate the series, one needs to see previous seasons as it will add tremendously to the viewers experience. We continue to see exceptional writing which is remarkable considering the short episode time frame. Normally an episode lasts around 30 minutes so what the creators have done to carry the viewer along is remarkable.

To fully appreciate where each character has come from and where they are at in the closing season, it will help to see the previous seasons. That said, the obvious off screen friendships clearly help the viewer understand the characters because over the years they have developed a friendship not just on screen but off screen. It is one of the things that keep the show moving along; the characters don’t just appear as actors on screen, they appear as real people, facing real life situations. While the viewer may not be able to relate to all of the characters, there are likely individual characters and situations we they can relate to.

If Entourage is about anything, it is about brotherhood and the love of family, especially men. Now don’t take me wrong here, it isn’t just about this, as there are strong female characters, but it is certainly, above all, about friendship and brotherhood. As a person of faith, who takes my Christian beliefs seriously, I am often offended by the lack of brotherhood and love that exists among my faith partners. I long for friendships and brotherhood like exhibited in Entourage. Sure, there are times we get angry, maybe in our disagreements with each other but there are examples of where real brotherhood, real family goes beyond the disagreements and disputes. I can’t help but believe, if the church, if people of faith loved unconditionally as the characters on this show, then maybe, just maybe, there would be more people accepting the things the church has to offer. One of the things so beautiful about Entourage is that brotherhood isn’t just with one or two people but 5 or 6 who have maintained that friendship and love over the course of 8 seasons. In many ways, the entourage in Entourage is like a church. There isn’t perfection but the members of the church don’t expect perfection, there isn’t the getting up and quitting over a simple disagreement, the characters understand love and friendship go beyond disagreement. Instead, there is willingness, a longing to stick together, to be there for each other. Some may question the ‘sinful’ lifestyles; yet, the common desire to love and be there for each other is the overlying theme, not just in Season 1, but also hitting home in the final season.

While I love this series, and the opportunity to own it, I am deeply disappointed in the Blu-ray rendition of the DVD. Don’t get me wrong, the color transfer, sound quality and more are exceptional but the lack of special features is disturbing, especially since it is a final season DVD set. There are no special features, there is a special feature, one feature that while good, isn’t enough. This series, its fans deserved more than what it got. While the star of the show is the show itself, the viewers watching this show over the last 8 years deserved more. It is for that reason I can’t recommend the purchase of the Blu-ray version of the film, certainly the standard DVD for a few dollars less or the boxed set of the entire series I can recommend but I can’t express enough my disappointment in HBO for not giving us substantially more in the realm of special features. They have done a good job in the past, but on this one, they let me down. Despite my displeasure with the special features I still highly recommend this DVD set. It is one of the few times that I will consider purchasing the entire boxed set of DVD’s. It is sad to see this show end and would be nice to have around. For fans of the show, I think they will agree with my thoughts here, for others, you just don’t know what you have missed, yes there are real adult situations but love conquers all and there is no greater love than to lay down your life for a brother. In Entourage we have seen the meaning of sacrifice for a grateful and wonderful 8 years.

Breaking Bad Season 4 on DVD

My son in law Brett told me about the television series Breaking Bad on the AMC Cable network right after the first season. Some how I ended up getting the DVD of Season 1 to watch shortly before the 2nd season and as a result, I haven’t missed a episode yet. There is a reason this show has garnished the audience and won the awards it has, which are far too numerous to mention, what I will say, is there is a very large list of critics who has listed this show as among the best ever made and in the top 10 of all time. I will say as to those critics, (with whom I don’t always agree) that on this subject, I whole heartedly agree. For example, Season 4, reviewed here, carries an approval rating of the review aggregator website Metacritic, of an unheard of rating of 96 out of 100.

To fully understand the premise of Breaking Bad, one has to go back to the first season. Walter White, played by award winning actor, Bryan Cranston is a high school chemistry teacher who has been diagnosed with lung cancer. In order to financially provide for his family after death he ends up making Crystal Meth. He teams up with former high school student Jesse Pinkman and enters the world of selling drugs. There is an unusual working relationship that develops between the two along with Walter’s Family where he attempts to keep all things secret from his family. That is Season 1 though, by the time we get to Season 4, the one under review here, most everything has turned to hell; his wife knows what is going on and while Walt started it all off with good intentions, the viewer is fully aware that by Season 4, there are moral consequences for actions and while one may have good intentions, how they go about getting to those intentions definitely has a bearing on the lives of people who may be around, whether knowing and involved with them or not.

More times than not, the transfer of a television series to Blu-ray just isn’t necessary due to the lower than normal filming qualities of the show. I don’t have the Blu-ray rendition for review but the transfer, quality of the show, sound and look is amazing! The series is shot on 35 mm film at a reported cost of $3,000,000 per episode, making it among the most expensive per episode programs on television. That cost in filming and production is obvious. From the incredible set design to the ensemble cast including its minor characters, there are as many memorable characters of any show since The Sopranos.

While one doesn’t have to watch every season to appreciate this season, as mentioned in other reviews, the benefit of shows like this is it allows a period of time where characters can be developed. The creator of the show has mentioned that he doesn’t view Breaking Bad as a series with many different stories or episodes; he sees it as a single story all playing together to get to a central theme. To fully understand the plights of the characters in this film, especially Walt and Jessie, you really need to start with Season 1. That said, it isn’t as difficult as one may imagine due to the reasonable prices of the videos, I was able to find online for this season from $19.99 - $32.99, ($34.99 for Blu-ray). One can easily find earlier seasons for less than that. While watching the viewer will become enthralled in the characters as there changes, twists, turns and surprises through out the season. The intensity develops from episode to episode until the final shocking episode of Season 4.

As coarse as Breaking Bad is in its language, imagery, and adult content, it is real and the coarseness of the show is needed to drive home the point that there are consequences for actions. The lovable Cranston family from Season 1 is no longer such a lovable family. Yet in the brilliance of the direction of the show we still want for Cranston. The viewer longs for Walt and his family to come together and get their life back. His cancer is in remission, there is after all no way the program can continue for 4 seasons otherwise and he is stuck in this world, dealing with unsavory characters and in a life likely not imagined when he first decided to become a high school chemistry teacher. In that life though, we the viewer can reflect on our lives and the decisions we make. While some may choose destiny or predestination as a component of life, Breaking Bad clearly drives home the concepts of free will. We all make choices and those choices have a clear impact on not only our lives but the lives of others we come into contact with. Those decisions often involve eternal consequences for those around us. In regard to these concepts, Breaking Bad plays like a book out of the Old Testament. Concepts and imagery that is as real as that of Breaking Bad causes one to justifiably make the comment, ‘if God is a God that would cause this, or bring this to happen to someone, then how can he be a loving God?’ This show, while not denying the existence of God, drives home that we make decisions and are responsible for those decisions. While the issues related to God of Free-Will Vs. Predestination is far more complicated than this analysis, the reality as a discussion starter or a place to think, is that Breaking Bad clearly brings home the reality that there are consequences for the things we do including the inappropriate things that are intended to accomplish something of value.

There are other spiritual values to Breaking Bad including the easy judgments we often place on people for the lives they live, which we may consider inappropriate or evil. Breaking Bad illustrates there are normally circumstances that causes one to make the decisions they do. Without a moral compass, such as God, we are on our own in making those decisions. While it doesn’t excuse the actions one makes, or the consequences, to understand the why is important because it is in the understanding and the addressing of the why that one can make a difference. For example, in the world of Walter White, a fair and appropriate medical care plan would have helped; a way to better provide for school teachers may have helped. Of course there is also the issue of poor judgment, which each person has control over but life is more complex than many realize and ultimately, we are either in this thing called life together, hopefully with the wisdom God can provide, or, we are in it alone. If in it alone, the consequences compound due to not only our actions and consequences in our own lives but also in the lives of others around us, including those we love.

I love the moral dilemma and lessons from Breaking Bad. For fans of the show the DVD is a must. Season 4 has over 13 hours of special features. There are excellent commentary episodes where we get some wonderful insight into filming techniques, character insights and more. There are also some pretty entertaining features such as a Karaoke by one of the shows chacters. Fans of Breaking Bad, even those who have seen each episode on television will enjoy this DVD and it is certainly affordable.

A final note, for those that don’t know, Season 5 is reportedly the last season for Breaking Bad. I am anxiously awaiting it. I hope there is resolve, repentance, and change in the characters that allows them to get back to their lives. Unfortunately, I can’t figure out for the life of me how the lives of The Whites’ or others in the show can end up in a good way. There are times that outside of the eternal, the decisions we make on this earth have finality to them. There are certain laws, spiritual, physical and societal that once broken, have consequences. It will be entertaining and thought provoking to see what finality lies in Season 5. While I hope for good, it is possible that Walter White’s decisions have an unfortunate end. Of course in that, there are lessons to learn and life examples to apply. It is one of the things that makes Breaking Bad such an outstanding, worthwhile show.

HBO's How To Make It In America Season 1

I love premium network programming, HBO, Starz, Showtime and others have not only provided quality series programming, they are telling story that is worth watching, at least most of it. One new series, now entering Season 2 is How To Make It In America starring Bryan Greenberg as Ben Epstein, a young clothing designer who dreams of making it big, and his friend, Cameron ‘Cam’ Caldereon, played by Victor Rasuk, a street hustler who refuses to give up while looking for short-cuts. This well acted, well told series is one that many may have not heard of, but it is good enough to deserve an audience as it looks at the lives of those living in the rough and tough streets of New York, aspiring to make it in America.

One of the frequent criticisms of premium channel series is the use of nudity and sexual situations. While there are certainly sexual situations in this series, there is no nudity. I only mention that to illustrate the excellent story telling. The direction, editing, musical score and virtually everything else about How To Make It In America has its focus on story. This series recognizes the importance of quality attributes in all areas of filmmaking. The quality demonstrated here adds to the overall enjoyment of the program and draws the viewer in.

The development of character is something many television programs do because they have the time to do so, unfortunately, being able to develop characters does not mean they actually do it. In How To Make It In America we get to know the characters and care about them. The program develops the characters in such a way the viewer can likely relate to them and their experiences. We see the good and bad experiences of life exhibited not only in the primary characters but also in the supporting cast. One such character is Cam’s cousin Rene, played by one of my favorite character actors Luis Guzman. Rene has just been released from prison and on parole in the shows time-line. He has difficulty getting away from his old ways but he is challenged to do so. We see this not only in his character, but in others. We see various individuals working to make it in America. The development of character in not only the starring roles, but also the supporting roles helps make this program worth watching.

How To Make It In America follows the dreams of its characters who have lived in and grown up in tough communities. Each character has dreams that are hard to achieve. That doesn’t mean they don’t go after their dreams though. We see the importance of family, friends, and a self-determination that won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. In each character we see strengths that allow them to help out others, whether a friend or family member. The strengths and love portrayed are admirable and appreciated. They reminded me of what should occur in faith groups, but unfortunately often times don’t. We see a love and appreciation where each character is willing to sacrifice for others; even during the times where there may be sacrifices to pay as a result of standing up and caring. One of the things I also appreciated is the willingness of the characters to go after their dreams. So often it seems as if we live in a hopeless society, with little hope, yet, hope is exhibited here in a powerful way. It is the hope of a better future, a brighter tomorrow that often drives one to move forward. This series illustrates the importance of that concept called hope.

I loved this show! I had never heard of it until getting the DVD for review but I will make plans to follow up on it during season 2. One of the only negatives is that season 1 is only 8 episodes. I wanted more. There are also some very good special features on the DVD, among them a follow up on a character in the series, Wilfredo Gomez, based on the real life character of Javier Nunez, a New York Skating legend. While one may not realize the significance of the backdrop story centering on skateboarding in the series, I expect that to be developed more in season 2. The action and commentary on skateboarding in the special features will make this a worthwhile purchase for skating enthusiast. I suspect that most people who love good drama, with a little humor mixed in will appreciate this series produced in part by Mark Wahlberg. I know I did, it was like finding a buried jewel, and that is just what How To Make It In America is, a jewel of a series.

Disney's Have A Laugh, Volume 4

Disney is continuing its series Have A Laugh where it is redoing some of its classic cartoons, many of which have not been seen in some time. Their unique approach of releasing the DVD’s with updated music and quality re-mastering improvements to the original product has received quite a bit of praise. For the fans of classic Disney, the current release of Volume 4 will likely keep them happy.

I was actually quite pleased to see some of the older Disney pieces I hadn’t seen in some time, and a couple I had never seen. What I didn’t expect was a remix of some of the features using contemporary music as music styled videos. The transfer quality of the old footage was done quite well. The reproduction and editing with its usage of contemporary music while done nicely actually hindered my enjoyment of the cartoons using that style. The original cartoons with their original score were the highlight of the DVD’s.

One of the pleasures of the old Disney features is the reminder of the early and classic Disney. The characters, from Mickey Mouse to Pluto, and form Donald Duck to Goofy will bring back memories for many parents watching the with their children. Each character is a character many will know well and Disney and the early creators did an excellent job at maintaining character traits with each character over the years.

These old Disney cartoons bring back a seemingly time of innocence. One thing I fully expect them to do is to bring back memories and times where parents and young children can spend quality time together. There isn’t so much the concern of pressing social themes which seems to exist in many contemporary cartoons, there is instead an innocence which has as a primary purpose the desire to make one laugh.

While there is on the DVD what is called ‘Re-Micks’ which has the cartoons playing to contemporary music, I didn’t care for it. The real pleasure of this DVD is the original cartoons themselves. There are special features that are primarily marketing ploys using the same cartoons we see in remixed forms. I was rather let down and disappointed. Unfortunately, there just weren’t enough cartoons on the DVD.

If there had been a few more cartoons on the DVD, despite the issues regarding the remixes and adaptations to the cartoons, I would have been able to justify owning the product. The original cartoons were actually quite enjoyable and entertaining. There may be those who have enjoyed the series that will enjoy this more than I, but I imagine most would agree with my assessment. If looking for a good time with the kids this is an easy and fun hour. This DVD will bring back memories and provide children a taste of the past, a past that all too many parents will relate to.

Billy The Exterminator Season 3

As I get older I am often reminded of the old days of television. There were three major networks and major limitations as to what was available for viewing. My how the times have changed! Now with the access of hundreds of networks and channels there are hundreds of options. Between the History Channel and the Fox Movie Channel and from Spike TV to A&E, there are ample selections on the tube where virtually every household can find something to keep them happy. My family enjoys several cable channels and thankfully with the advent of TIVO and the DVR we can watch that programming and wiz through the commercials. One of the shows we enjoy on A&E is Billy The Exterminator.

A&E has just released Season 3 of Billy The Exterminator. It has a growing audience and while one may wonder what is so good about a reality show with a focus on a family which runs an extermination company in Louisiana; one only has to tune into one episode to see the shows uniqueness. The company featured in the show is; Vexcon and is owned by Billy and his family, The Bretherton’s. The family dynamics and Billy’s methods are a part of the draw. Billy dresses in leather and he and his brother, Rickey, look more like an 80’s hair band than they do the operators of an extermination company. Between the dynamics of the family’ a father with health issues to his wife who operates the office and their spouses who are sometimes brought into the field to deal with things like snakes or spiders which they may have a fear of. Each episode deals with the dynamics in such a way that has the viewer realizing the pests around the house from cockroaches to rodents may be in need of extermination from a professional. The uniqueness of Vexcon is that the company prefers, when possible, to relocate the animals and operate under environmentally save methods with respect for the animals.

For a television show, Billy The Exterminator is quite well done. While the television show has the tendency to be burdensome due to the commercials, the DVD’s provide a more enjoyable experience than even the DVR and TIVO. The editing and flow of the show is nicely done and each show has a minimal plot focus. Normally it deals with either issues in the family or issues with the family in need of extermination services. The cinematography is quite exceptional and one of the benefits of the DVD is the special features show the dangers often involved, not just for the cast but the crew. When exterminating for thousands of bees, all are at risk, including those doing the filming. One of the misperceptions is that reality programming isn’t scripted; we see that in fact at least for this show, it is in fact, scripted as there are prevailing themes highlighted each week.

Season 3 of Billy The Exterminator does not have nearly as much focus on the extended family outside of the boys and their parents. While various extended characters are featured in the credits and opening scenes, there are some of them that are not in the program at all. Some of this is likely due to the conflicts that were portrayed on screen in previous seasons and in the personal and private lives of the characters. We do see some good footage of Billy, Rickey and their parents and as a regular viewer, I was just fine with that.

One of the things I appreciate about the show is the uniqueness of this family. While the parents, Bill Sr. and Donnie are more old-fashioned, we see some of their parental influence having an impact on their children. Bill Sr. and Donnie are active church members and their office is decorated with symbols of faith such as crosses. We see in one episode where they are on their way home from church where they decide to go out of their way to help a friend. The friend has a snake loose in their house and even though Donnie is scared of snakes she goes out of her way to help. She is willing to make sacrifices for those she loves. Then we see in various episodes Billy and Rickey who don’t seem to have a strong indication of their spirituality, yet we see numerous episodes where they are willing to help others in difficult situations, often not charging those they have helped. There is an obvious appreciation for children and the elderly. Their compassion for the children, elderly, poor and their communities is one of the things that drive my appreciation for the show. The stereotypes people often have based on dress, style, and look is addressed in the show. We see all people have potential and they can and sometimes do, help others. The conflict based on appearance versus the willingness to accept help from someone different is an ongoing theme. Billy and his brother, despite their look are able to show people from different backgrounds that love is possible for all people in all situations. Love is not based on how one looks. If we are willing to get by the initial impression, we can quickly learn that love is displayed by what one does.

I like Billy The Exterminator. I liked it long before getting Season 3 for review. I don’t especially have an interest in the extermination business and while there seems to be an awful lot of roaches, bees, and the like to remove from the North Western Part of Louisiana, at least for now, I haven’t gotten tired of seeing Vexcom on their extermination jobs. I haven’t gotten tired of it because it seems like A&E understands the concept of developing characters, providing a little education, and having a show that does more than show how an extermination company works. A&E understands the concepts of why it is important to show how cultures can intertwine with positive results.

The DVD offered some decent special features worth watching. While there could have been more, it was satisfying. Season 3 of Billy The Exterminator is a fun show to watch, but it also has its touching moments. For fans of the show, it is definitely worth owning, for those who aren’t familiar with it; you will enjoy viewing it as a rental. A&E has provided a fun, decent, family oriented show. I hope it is around for a few more seasons and as the season’s progress, we continue to see the positive influence of parents on their children, in-laws and others around them. If A&E does this, I suspect Billy will be around for some time to come.

The Velveteen Rabbit

I have to admit, while growing up I followed Michael Landon Sr. and his work. I really liked and admired him. I felt that after his death we had all lost something valuable. Society needed someone to drive home the concept of family. I was cautious when his son Michael Landon Jr. came onto the scene and appeared to take over his fathers’ vision and work. Despite the caution, I have been pleased with his efforts, and after seeing The Velveteen Rabbit which Michael Landon Jr. wrote, and directed, I have to say, I think his father would have been so proud of what his son is doing. Landon Jr. is keeping the family movie, alive with integrity and quality. For me, The Velveteen Rabbit is without question, one of the year’s big surprises.

Sometimes I get advance screeners worth watching, and others that are a waste of time. When getting The Velveteen Rabbit, I was expecting a hokey animation story done trying to capitalize off a popular story. What I got was a live action / animation blend with a very good story that was extremely entertaining and very moving emotionally. Michael Landon Jr. has directed and provided a movie sure to surprise many who see it. It is so good that I would have liked to have seen wide spread commercial theatrical release. The timing of the release of the movie is the only thing I personally question. This classic story, with a strong Christmas theme is beautiful. It isn’t the first time a potential Christmas Classic has been released outside of the Christmas season, can anyone say, It’s a Wonderful Life. While this surely won’t become as big as that movie, few will, it is destined, at least in my house, to be a regular Christmas viewing.

The first thing I noticed about The Velveteen Rabbit is the cast. While the part of Mom played by Jane Seymour is minimal we actually see quite substantive roles given by Tom Skerritt who plays Horse, and Ellen Burstyn who plays the part of Swan. Between these three we have numerous awards from Emmy’s to Oscar’s. All give credence to their craft in their contribution to the animated segments in the film. The quality doesn’t stop there in the acting. I was also quite impressed with the young boy Toby played by Matthew Harbour. This youngster gives depth to his part, and is a young man the viewer finds themselves caring for. He is surrounded by other notables like Kevin Jubinville who plays Toby’s father, John, his grandmother Ellen played Una Kay also provides wonderful depth as Toby’s grandmother. You find yourself disliking her, and then growing with her character as her character grows. Another wonderful portrayal is by Michael Sinelnkoff who plays the Butler. While having minimal screen time, he provides a voice of reason in this fascinating and addictive story.

I was concerned about the blending of animation with live action, but Landon does a very good job of blending the two to where it is not a distraction. The quality editing, direction, cinematography and periodic costuming is done very nicely and given the detail expected in a major theatrical release. I was impressed with other components of the film often neglected. The quality of sound and lighting were very well done. These are things I seldom make mention of but the effort here is worthy.

The story develops as Toby’s dad, takes him to spend the Christmas Holidays with his grandmother. Toby has lost the joy of family in the death of his mother and his father has never adjusted. Instead of giving Toby the time he needs, he isolates him and spends most of his time at work. This old tale as portrayed in the song Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin, is a reminder of not only fathers but adults who take time away from their children’s lives. Unfortunately for Toby, just like many other children, the adult presence with the child is limited because there is just too much going on for adults to spend time with children. In fact, Toby hasn’t even learned the most basic of skills for a boy, how to throw a ball.

While at his grandmothers, Toby finds a magic attic and it is here that life lessons occur, for Toby but also the viewer if they allow. Toby befriends a stuffed rabbit, and while shedding a tear, the rabbit comes to life and Toby discovers an animated world where he discovers love. It is here that children, in their imaginations discover the things God intended for them, often in the little things we can even learn in the faith of a child.

My son loved the television star, Lassie. I used to watch Lassie every Sunday night on television when I was young. My son, Nathan took it a step further, he would go around for what seemed like hours pretending to be Lassie, never speaking but barking, and doing all of the things Lassie did. I could have, like other parents, ignored this, but my wife quickly taught me this was okay, and to play along. We did, and I still treasure the moments of having Lassie follow me around on all fours as I would give her a treat for being such a good dog. While some think these things were crazy, we knew God gave the imagination of a child to the children for a reason. The treasured moments of spending that time with my own children, who are now both grown, is something that built relationship, it was showing each other love. The Velveteen Rabbit takes this concept of loving and being there for your children to a level that not only children will appreciate, but so will the adult audience.

As Toby goes through his journey, many things happen. We see the results of what occurs when a parent is too busy to provide these moments. The Velveteen Rabbit also shows the joy that occurs when these moments are allowed to occur. We see transformation in the lives of the live action characters, but also in the lives of the animated characters. There is one tragic scene where we learn that no greater love has any toy than to give up their life for a boy. This is an obvious lesson on the passage from the Bible that talks about loving each other.

There are other lessons and examples; we see an illustration of the great Michelangelo art, The Hand of God where we see God reaching down to touch humanity. The touch of a loving parent can resemble in some ways the touch from God. We see illustrations that loving another are worth the risk and when giving love to others we discover life. There is a concept presented that love makes us real but a beautiful reminder that it’s not love that makes us real, it is loving that makes us real. Learning to love means simple things like playing ball together, teaching a child how to hold a bat, knit a darn, it involves spending time with each other, doing things together.

Just as in real life, there are few excuses. We have all had lessons in our life; we know the joys, hurts, pains, and wants. We have people who still get it to give us reminders. One example of this in The Velveteen Rabbit is Neil, a Christmas tree salesman. While a small part, it gives illustrations and lessons to this point. We all have those reminders, unfortunately, it often takes a tragedy, or potential tragedy, to bring us back to a place of understanding, a place of, if you will, loving.

The Velveteen Rabbit is a Chronicles of Narnia type of tale filled with magic and allegory. It is a movie that touches all audiences, not just children, but the child buried in each person. It is those types of lessons where we can find joy and escape the doldrums that hold us down. Children still have the magic if we allow it to happen and don’t squelch it. The magic can be contagious if we as adults join in the fun, join in the journey with our children.

I loved the Velveteen Rabbit because it is a wonderful reminder of loving others and being a parent. My wife, a teacher of over 30 years now, and I both unexpectedly teared up while watching this film. I didn’t expect this movie to do that for me. It was more than joy though, it was a life lesson I wish I would have had some years ago to remind me of my own needs. I can’t help but think, Michael Landon Sr. is looking down from Heaven, realizing, and knowing that his son is carrying on his vision and dream. I expect he is smiling and for those who have longed for quality family entertainment, seeing this movie will have you smiling as well.

While not a perfect movie, The Velveteen Rabbit is an exceptional movie. On a scale of 1 – 10, for the 9 letters in the word Christmas, minus a little boy named Toby, I give a very deserving and enjoyable 8.
