The Reality of Reality TV

Please make sure to see the other 2 articles in this series, both interviews with Dave Redmon from Ice Road Truckers and Worlds Most Dangerous Highways and Christa Stephens and Dennis Croft from Small Town Security.  Links at the conclusion of the article.

“Reality Television, I am so tired of it, can’t the networks come up with something new?” This quote or something similar is something I often hear. Of course the networks provides programming that gets ratings, if they continue to provide “Reality” television it is because they have the viewers to support the programming and they are making money. I am smart enough to know, that it isn’t about a moral conscious, it is to most of these companies, about making profits. I will admit, in my own journey of watching television, I have found myself enjoying “Reality Television.” I still think an episode from Deadliest Catch where one of the fishing boat captains dies may be one of the most memorable seasons, and episodes ever aired on television. The reality for me though is the more I have watched “Reality” programming, the more I have questioned the reality. It has caused me to question programs like Big Brother, Ice Road Truckers and numerous others. What I am seeing, despite the concept of reality being promoted is more scripted than real. Are the television stations lying to me regarding their programming, or am I just being foolish to expect reality in “Reality” television?

Whether trying to cover up an alleged Rape on MTV’s Real World, to suicides involving participants from such shows as Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares and Megan Wants a Millionaire, to murder and attempted murder of guests on The Jenny Jones Show and The Jerry Springer Show and more, one has to wonder about those putting out these shows. While the programs have been careful to prevent such horrific events, the reality is, “Reality Television” has had an impact on those participating on the shows. Despite the horrors in the past, many horrors and controversies continue, including now controversy among the Hutterites from a program shown on A&E. Hutterites from King Colony Ranch, depicted in the series, has taken action and requested that A&E never air again the episodes from the season, stating that many of the scenes “were scripted.” This isn’t the first time allegations like this have been made about “Reality Television.” It was my own viewing of the program Ice Road Truckers, Season 5 featuring as one of the drivers, David C. Redmon that led me to this conclusion. As I watched the show I noted in my review that much of what I was seeing on screen didn’t make sense. I had also noted similar scenario’s on programs like Big Brother. I decided to make contact with one of the apparent scapegoats on Ice Road Truckers Dave Redmon to ask him about the show.

If ever looking for honesty, to the point of certainly creating controversy, speak to someone like Dave Redmon. It was clear from the get go of Redmon’s claims of productions scripting, favoritism, plans to get him fired without his knowledge in the 4th episode before the show even started, even “trying to get someone killed.” Redmon does this plus provided negative images on other members of the show for their actions and more. If one never thought grudges and hard feelings didn’t go beyond the programs end they would definitely seem to be wrong in the case of Dave Redmon. All of that said though, if what he says is true, and there is no reason to doubt it, there could be good reason for actions and attitudes like his.

Redmon participated in three programs for The History Channel, IRT’s Most Dangerous Highways (2 Seasons) and Ice Road Truckers Season 5. Redmon claims that the differences between the three shows are like night and day. It is one of the things that give credibility to his story. If he were bashing all programs, all cast members, one would have to wonder if the issue isn’t Dave Redmon. From communicatin with him, it is possible to conclude that while Redmon may be one who speaks his mind, he does so with a sense and mannerism that gives reason to believe he was deeply mislead and hurt by the actions on the programs, especially when realizing that as a real life individual, needing to go back to a real life job, playing with the lives of its characters by scripting negative impressions of some of them is not of any value.

One of the things that come to mind here is not just the initial impressions which are molded not so much by the individuals on screen as those behind the camera and editing booth. The script writers, producers, directors, editors and so forth determine what we see, and how we see it. Anyone involved in film knows of the impact of these individuals. A film crew can dramatically influence a persons image, whether an actor, or a person thinking that they are going to be fairly represented. Unfortunately, we the viewer are often duped to believe what we see, we even cast judgment not on reality but on perceived reality which is a totally different thing. Most religious groups, certainly Christianity are founded on the concept that each person is important in the eyes of God, in fact, in Christianity, so important that God would send his son to die for the individual because God values each person so much. Yet, one of the obvious dangers of “Reality Television” is that we are cast into a system where we are systematically encouraged to make judgments not on things that are real, but on things that are presented as real. One has to wonder, just as advertisers know that repeated showings of their commercials cause us to react to their products in a certain way, is it possible that the repeated showings of real people, non actors, presented in the ways the production companies want those people to be presented for better ratings, can in effect, also impact how we see others, whether a Dave Redmon, or in more general terms, a truck driver, secretary, cocktail waitress and you can throw in any other group of people. If the answer to that is yes, then we have to question what role we play as viewers in supporting programs that often times, have dramatic and negative impacts on some of these people.

Fortunately, with all of the scripting that is going on in “Reality Television,” some of the horror stories that are being presented, we are seeing new programs that are looked at as more of a docudrama than they are a “Reality” show. One such show receiving a lot of attention is AMC’s Small Town Security. The show features a unique and different cast. Non actors which have many in the press singing high praise up to this point for the show. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Christa Stephens and Dennis Croft of the show. Christa is the secretary in the office of JJK Security & Investigations in Ringgold Georgia, just outside of Chattanooga Tennessee. Dennis is a transgendered male who is known as Lieutenant and is the person responsibility of the security operations of JJK Security Agency which employees between 60 and 70 security guards for services of various types in the area.

The uniqueness of this program is the characters in the show. They are all unique, all different, and all, unscripted. This unique group is led by Chief, Joan Koplan. Joan is a character in her own right along with a hoarder for a husband who also tolerates the crush and love of his wife from his Chief of Security, a transgendered male, Dennis Croft. One of the primary differences with this show is the willingness of the production crew to let the cameras roll and use only what they capture. The cast assured me there is no scripting on the program, it is in fact, the real life realities, and despite how controversial and different they may be, that gives credibility and intrigue to this show for the viewer.

Small Town Security has received a great deal of praise and criticism for its subject matter and the people in the show. Unfortunately many of those being critical seem to be residents of the area. There is a fear the show will portrays a negative image of Southerners, specifically those of Ringgold Georgia, a border town to Chattanooga Tennessee. As one living in the Midwest, originally from East Tennessee, I don’t find that perspective to be true. The show instead shows the uniqueness’s and differences of some people. It also shows the absurdity of others, yet, in that presentation, we see hope, promise and even moments where we are moved. Whether the willingness of a transgendered male coming out on local television or a man who is dealing with issues of hording who is making the effort to address needs in his life regarding hording we can find room to be impacted. If the viewer allows, there is room for hope, because we can see that in the imperfections and differences of those on screen, we can be inspired to be more. We can laugh along the way, although some of the activity is sophomoric at best, it is still funny, yet serious. Is it for everyone? Obviously there will be many offended by writing to much into the themes of the show but for many others, it will not only provide a good laugh, but a lesson in life on being yourself.

My faith tells me that God’s people, the world are made up of all kinds of people each with unique gifts and talents. I don’t believe any two of us are totally alike. It is refreshing to see a show that shows that it is okay to be who God made you to be. It is also disheartening to think that when dealing with some people, real people especially, that a production crew is molding and scripting others to be who they want them to be. I find one model refreshing and another repulsive. I would have personally expected more from The History Chanel in its programming, and the same could be said about any number of networks. On the flip, I can applaud AMC for getting it right, at least up to this point. I only hope they continue to get it right. I don’t have a problem with presenting the real lives of real people, in fact, there is more intrigue and better story when we the viewer, are allowed to see people as they really are. Is Dave Redmon come off as being a little upset, you bet he does, and frankly, I for one can’t blame him. On the other hand, despite the quirkiness can I appreciate the characters on Small Town Security, despite their believing and acting differently than I in many situations? You bet I can! Heck I may even have to admit, in many ways, I am just like them. Like Joan, I can laugh at a good bit of passing gas, but also like Dennis, I can also appreciate the difficulty and courage it takes to share something about yourself that others may not understand or appreciate. Now for me, that is reality, not some Joe Blow sitting in a production or editing booth turning me or representing me to be something other than who I really am. My only hope for Small Town Security is that AMC lets the cast continue being themselves. They frankly seem like too good a people to go messing their lives up. While there may be some in their community or around the world who don’t understand them, they, in the reality of at least this viewer, represent all of us, and in that, I can find value.

History's Season Six The Universe on Blu-ray

I have to admit, I hadn’t seen a single season of the History Channels’ The Universe until this season. Considering that this is the 6th season of the series, one can’t help but respect the efforts of The History Channel to take on such a massive effort at explaining the mysteries and science of this great universe. I can’t help but also think, that in six seasons, there has to be a repeat of some basic information as it is presented in this largely CGI imagery and discussion involving various scientists from various specialties. I don’t know how much of this series is repeated from the past and how much is new; I can only review based on what I have seen and what I have seen up to this point is season six. In that, I can’t help but be impressed with many things, confused in some, left in awe with others, and perplexed at the totality of this project.

The Universe, Season Six is largely a CGI presented program. While there are images of The Universe that certainly come from real footage, much of what is shown couldn’t be done without CGI. While many television series of this sort fall short in CGI quality, as has even The History Channel at times, this particular series looks quite good via Blu-ray in both the visual and sound qualities of the program. There is enough interview segments and real life video footage that keeps this show entertaining and easy to watch. While I expected a narrative format over the season, each episode appears as a stand alone program. It still comes across as entertaining and educational as each varied program has various subject matters, all of which are well scripted. I have to admit, while I loved science in school I wasn’t a good student and should have taken my studies more seriously. This series would have increased my interest in science specifically regarding the universe and space. The History Channel does a good job at explaining the theories and science of the universe in an entertaining way.

One of the things I liked about The Universe, Season Six, although I don’t agree with all of the conclusions is the willingness to address the possibility of God, and/or other sources, (such as aliens and ufo’s) in the understanding of the origins of the universe. As I watched the series, especially the doomsday episodes of which there are many, I couldn’t help but recognize the complexity of the universe. I am not a scientist, but I consider myself educated and one who has the ability to think outside of the box as well as within the box. I appreciate things like logic and reason and it has been stated by others in the past, I can’t help but think the only logical explanation for the origins of the universe is the hand of God. The complexity of something like the universe, coming about from nothing, takes a greater leap of faith for me than the possibility of God. The complexity of faith, including its own possibilities is a concept that caused me to ponder within my own Christian faith practice.

I follow a faith that centers on the person of Jesus Christ. Aspects of that faith are congruent with other faith systems such as Islam and Judaism. Each of these faith systems recognizes a monotheistic God (singular God.) All would accept the Old Testament, much of their faith books overlap from the point of creation up to several hundred years before Jesus and Muhammad. Each of these faiths speaks of a God, who they claim created the universe, and knows each of us by name. The complexity of God, his ability to create something as massive as the universe and at the same time know each person by name is something I thought about while watching this DVD. I appreciate that various perspectives, including the possibility that God created the universe is presented in a respectful yet, objective way. In the search for the origins of the universe, we also see the universe explained in the very first verse of the Bible, where it states, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The place of faith in the search of science versus faith includes an act of faith, no matter which concept one believes. Unfortunately, one of the concepts that permeate many is that science and faith are not cohesive or mutually compatible. I disagree and the series, at least in one program may cause one to think of the possibilities.

I realize that for many, many of the concepts of the The Universe, Season Six may be rehashed stories and science. As mentioned earlier, I don’t know as I haven’t seen the previous seasons. I did find Season Six enlightening, entertaining and educational, but more importantly I found it thought provoking, causing me to marvel if you will at the concept that with the complexity of the Universe, I serve a God who knows me by name. That said, there was something I didn’t like about the DVD set, the lack of special features. With a series of this type, it would have been easy to include special features, including complete interviews, varying view points, and the myriads of information that I am sure ended up on the cutting room floor.

I am not certain if the blu-ray quality of this DVD set is a must own for DVD owners. I would say, the low suggested retail pricing and sure to be lower pricing makes it an okay purchase. I would have been glad to pay the few extra dollars on an already low price for the Blu-ray. I just don’t know if everyone will view it that way. I hope that as people watch this, they understand, much of what is presented is theory. While there are certainly doomsday aspects to this series, I am confident in my faith, and find solitude in my belief in a God. I don’t know how one who has no faith in God would feel good about the conclusions in this series. There would certainly be very little, if any hope. I realize that faith is a concept that can’t be measured; I also realize that whatever view on the creation of the universe one takes, there is a measure of faith, whether in God or science. I think there is a third place we can come to with a better understanding of the complexities of the universe that is accurate in using science, yet at the same time, seeing and believing that God is the creator. There is no doubt we live in a complex and massive universe. There is also no doubt that over the years, a great deal of wisdom and knowledge has come about regarding our universe. It is nice to know, this series breaks it down in such a way that we can see and better understand those complexities of the universe we live in. As for me, this series didn’t answer all of my questions, but did make me appreciate the power of God regarding the detail, majesty, and awesomeness of the universe.

Ice Road Truckers Season 5 On DVD When The Script Goes Beyond Reality

Spoiler Alert: There are aspects of the season which will spoil part of the program viewing for you included in this review.

Many have a perception that what they watch on Reality TV must be reality and what they watch on the History Channel, must be history, right? Right! The reality is that many are often dooped by what is called reality and this season while watching what in the past has been one of my favorite shows, Ice Road Truckers, I had some serious questions and most came about by watching the events surrounding one of the shows primary characters, Dave Redmon. One of the concerns I had was the reality of what appears to be production scripting on the life of a real person who just happens to be on a reality show. Fortunately, there is enough footage available that with a little effort, one can see the reality of how a television show may have just taken on, and used, the wrong person.

As to how the show is put together, while it is supposed to be reality television, Ice Road Truckers Season 5 is filled with entertainment, character development in such a way that one can’t help but see the scripting of the program. It is beautifully shot, although season 5 seems to have some let downs when comparing to previous seasons, especially the spin off seasons of IRT Worlds Most Dangerous Highways. We have a unique cast of characters, made up of real people, unfortunately, some we like, and others we don’t. When realizing that we are watching scripted television, one may become frustrated at the direction the program takes as much of it just doesn’t make sense. That said, I was personally still drawn to keep watching.

This season of IRT has a different flair from the past, we see one crew driving for the Carlile Transportation Systems group, a route generally known as the Dalton Highway from Fairbanks Alaska to Prudhoe Alaska and another group driving in Canada, from Winnipeg Canada to various remote communities. Through the course of this we see conflict between Dave Redmon, a new driver appearing previously in IRT Worlds Most Dangerous Highways, and his employers and co drivers, especially, Tony, a clear favorite within the company he works for despite his tendencies to be late and following his own schedule. We also see on the Winnipeg group three drivers where two drivers, Hugh and Rick team up and enter into what could be considered a race between the tortoise and the hare with the third driver in the region, Alex. Fortunately or unfortunately depending on how one views this series, we move from the excitement and danger of the roads themselves, (in some ways the stars of previous seasons) to the characters behind the wheels of the various trucks on the road. When seeing what transpires, especially with Dave Redmon in this series, a driver from Alabama with over 25 years of experience, I begin to wonder early on in the series, if this man was being treated fairly, and if in fact, this reality show could be doing more harm than good for the man. I knew he wasn’t an actor, and the way he was being presented and portrayed, in all likelihood, just wouldn’t work in most societies. If looking close enough, it became apparent; the editing process was not presenting him well. If however, one put themselves in his place, doing the work he was doing, they would likely find themselves feeling and acting more like Dave than they may realize.

Unfortunately in life we are often misunderstood, taken advantage of, and put at the mercy of the actions by others. How we respond to it is often be the measure of who we are and what we can accomplish, to a point. It is often said; ‘don’t let another impact your situation.’ That is easy for one who has a measure of wealth and independence, but for many who are at the mercy of others, whether an employer or a situation. It is easy to use words like ‘be strong,’ ‘persevere’ and others, but for most, words do not always allow one to escape their situation. This season of IRT shows what appears to me as an injustice in the way it represents, portrays, and impacts the life of one of its characters. Yet, he won’t allow himself to be anyone other than who he is. He speaks up for himself and often goes off and does things his own way. That is another reality of the world we live in, even when being effective at what one does and producing results, it does not mean others will want or allow us to do things other than the way they want. I love that my faith allows freedom and the opportunity to find peace. There are places of solitude where one can find peace with who they are and what they have done. The inconsistency and on screen antics of this show among the drivers by management especially regarding the driver, Tony Molesky, and his tendency to be late, and have other drivers consistently wait on him, was to me, just as atrocious as Dave’s antics. What is true regarding either driver is hard to understand or know as we the viewers of the program can easily loose confidence in the reliability of the story we are being shown. Unfortunately we live in a world that isn’t always fair, but that shouldn’t be a cliché we blindly accept, we should also accept, appreciate and understand the beauty of individuality.

IRT Season 5 is intriguing television. I honestly don’t see it as reality television though, especially Season 5. It is far more scripted than I would like and I don’t especially like the path it takes in the way it presents its characters. Unfortunately, while worth watching, it is the type of season that could play havoc on future seasons. Not because the characters in the show aren’t worth watching, in fact, they are, it isn’t because there was less danger in this season than in seasons past, it is because of the way the producers of the show chose to go with the characters and how they chose to impact their lives with what ‘they’ thought would be best for the show, thus taking it from ‘Reality TV’ to something that many programs have gone in the past. These types of actions have likely led to less appreciation for 'Reality TV;' it certainly kept Season 5 of IRT from being an enjoyable show in the end. When someone who can clearly drive the ice roads above the Arctic, in far less time, in a superior way over other drivers and isn’t appreciated or rewarded, one has to question, what is this show really about? If in fact there really is a Dash for the Cash prize or competition of some kind then the producers of this show would bring back Dave Redmon for another season to prove that he was in reality, the most effective and best driver on the show. Outside of working with the film crew in the truck, (where we also see some conflict,) driving really is a solitude type of job, while there are others on the road, to rob a man of his individuality, when he does it effectively, just doesn’t seem right to me, but since when did any of us really expect what was right from a ‘Reality Television Program?’

While there are some decent DVD special features with this product, I couldn’t help but miss out on the obvious exclusion, a follow up on the dispute between Dave, the Carlile Company and Tony. There are some outtakes and some interesting things, but while appreciated, even they fall a little short in content for me.

History Presents, America The Story Of Us, Rebels & Millennium

History, formerly known as The History Channel has become quite a force in cable networks. Not only are they presenting quality programs such as Pawn Stars, Pickers and more, they are producing quality programs that present a side of history that many need to be reminded of. While there are the controversial alien shows there are also examples such as the two recent programs, just released on DVD re from the series, America, The Story of US, including Rebels and Millennium. These two DVD’s present a side of history many should know, but unfortunately have either forgotten or didn’t learn.

Both DVD’s explore various stages of development in the United States. Rebels looks at the early stages of development that concludes with The Revolutionary war and Millennium look at recent history over the last hundred years, up to and including the space age and war on terror shortly thereafter the attacks on The World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Millennium also looks at how America became a world power and the reality of the timing of my viewing of this documentary wasn’t lost on me, that being, the same day as the last launch of the space shuttle.

History has done an excellent job at producing high quality programming that transfers to DVD in documentary format, from the excellent animation to quality reenactments and narration. The images on screen and scripting of both programs provide not only quality education, but quality entertainment. Rebels is the first part of a 12 part mini-series and Millennium the last. Each episode and DVD stands on its own.

In Rebels I especially enjoyed the aspects of history presented I didn’t know. One included the number of Blacks who fought for the United States during the Revolutionary War, and the speculation that the first Patriot killed was in fact, a black man. There is more though, one being the background of Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand von Steuben also known as Baron von Steuben. He was a General George Washington used to train troops and many credit as being the primary reason for the turn of events in the war. Few know of his historical contribution to America’s freedom. It is speculated that few know of him in part due to the fact that von Steuben was a ‘blatant homosexual.’ The understanding and reality that all people were involved in America’s freedom in this series is quite enlightening. Another surprise for many will also be the importance of Tobacco in early America.

In Millennium I was reminded of the pride many took in the space program and the role it played in a difficult time, especially the 1960’s and 70’s. There is a display of American Spirit and Pride that is admirable. It is likely one of the reasons many are now discouraged about the place America seems to be, especially with the recent, last launch of the space shuttle and apparent dissemination of NASA.

There is much from a historical perspective to like about both DVD’s. As I have gotten older I have learned to appreciate history, and the history presented here is not only educational, it reminds me of a time I lived, and the lack of truth in some of the things I was taught. There are reasons many have developed a focus on self as opposed to the collective spirit of a people, and nation. It is likely, in part, the intent to satisfy self, withholding truth, and presenting a history that excludes people we don’t like or understand that is a part of the reasoning we as a nation have the focus on self we do.

I can’t help but be reminded of the mighty things that can be accomplished by people coming together. For example, in only recent history have we started to explore the possibility of gays in the military, but, we forget, many historians credit a gay man with turning the troops around to win the Revolutionary War. These programs cause me to question, are we really inclusive as a nation, and have we so quickly forgotten what it was that inspired some to try and destroy our nation on September 11, 2001? That is the power of programming like this, especially when done in a thought provoking way. We are forced to think beyond ourselves.

The fear of forgetting our past not only transcends in nationalism, but also on the same type of thing from a faith perspective. For those of us who have had faith experiences that changed our lives, do we get so caught up in ourselves that we forget about the people we once were, our history, and the truths of our past? Many will say no, while at the same time, ignoring those around them who have walked in the same shoes we have, thankfully, some will remember and see the similarities and be challenged to help others. They will come together as opposed to isolating in their spiritual walk.

I appreciated these two documentaries, and while they are worth owning, I can’t highly recommend them as they are simply presentations of the television show, without commercials, but with nothing beyond what was on television. I would have liked some special features but unfortunately got none. I would have preferred more than a rehashing of the television shows, but unfortunately that was all I got. While these DVD’s are of benefit to those who didn’t see the program, it provides little to those who did see them or perhaps taped it for their own usage. There are educational benefits for the classroom if used there, but their use will challenge what some have been taught from a revisionist perspective of history.

What is of use beyond this is the search for truth within our own lives and practices. Not only from a historical perspective related to nationalism, but from a perspective related to our individualism. So much of history mirrors our experiences and in some ways, shapes our personalities. An understanding of the history and times some of us grew up in can help us have a better understanding of ourselves. I have learned to appreciate that, unfortunately, I think some are so into themselves that they will care less about truth and what shaped them and our country. I could be wrong though, and on that point, I hope I am.

What Is Up With Television These Days?

Am I the only one who has noticed as of recent the improvement in television programming? I have heard from others that they think there is more originality and better storytelling on television than there are for theatrical release movies. It has me scratching my head and asking; ‘What’s up with that?’

I am not normally one to watch network television, for all kinds of reasons, mainly it has to do with the same old storytelling and frankly the time consumption it takes to watch 42 minutes of programming that takes an hour of your time. That is where I can openly state; ‘Thank God for TiVo and DVR recording!’ With the advent of these devices, I can whip through an hour program in about 44 minutes. I don’t know about you, but for me, time is valuable. With that said, I have discovered several programs this year that are for my wife and I, a step above the rest and programming we consider must watch television, the surprise in all of this for us, it the number of programs on network television.

I recently decided to go through and list my top 10 programs of the year. I will also share a few worth honorable mention.

First the two honorable mentions:

Surprisingly the first two programs on my honorable mention list are on the History Channel and air back to back on Mondays. The two are American Pickers and Pawn Stars. These are two reality programs that explore real people, in their real jobs. American Pickers follows two long time friends as they traverse the countryside looking for what some consider junk, and others consider valuables. The relationship between these two characters and the stories of those they come into contact with is refreshing. On the flip side in Pawn Stars we see the operations of a successful pawn shop in Las Vegas. While we learn about the operations of pawn shops, we also learn about the valuables many people have. While American Pickers falls just short of my top 10 list I find the packaging of these two programs together make them both worthy of honorable mention in my own top 10 list.

There is one other program my wife insisted I put on my list, and I agreed, it is the ABC program, Castle. In this crime drama we see a unique perspective between writer Matt Castle and detective Kate Beckett. Mixed in are original mysteries and the relationships between Castle and Beckett. Castle, a single father, gives his input to help solve crimes while at the same time using his deductive reasoning. In some ways the show is similar to The Mentalist on CBS, but enough unique differences to at least give it an honorable mention spot.

#10 on my list is the new CBS Hit of the season, and a remake with a retelling of an old standard, Hawaii Five – O. Here we see an adequate modernization of characters created in my own youth. As with the original, and other programs such as Miami Vice, this program will contribute to the cultural norms of society, from its music to dress, this program is on the cutting edge. It shows what can be done when one recreates an older program, but at the same time realizing it needs to go in its own direction as much as possible. There is a good blending of characters and enough good stories to keep the viewer going. I especially appreciate the focus on friendship and family.

#9 on my list occurs on Wednesday nights, again on CBS. It is the new program, The Defenders starring Jim Belushi as attorney Nick Morelli and his partner, attorney Pete Kaczmarek played by Jerry O’Connell. This series follows escapades of two real life Vegas Attorneys and the chemistry between O’Connell and Belushi is nothing short of wonderful. We also see a little different twist on the old standard courtroom drama. CBS has done a good job at incorporating story, chemistry, drama and comedy. We also see a different side of the law with a focus on defense attorneys. We see that the stories and perceptions presented by the media of the charged individual does not always mean they are guilty. The Defenders does a good job at presenting value in the old adage, ‘innocent until proven guilty.’ Thankfully it does it in an entertaining way where we see some attorneys who are still willing to stand up and fight against injustice.

#8 on my list is another CBS program, Criminal Minds. This is one of the older programs to make it to my list, this in and of itself not only says something about the quality of this program, but the quality of the new season of programs. Criminal Minds is more than a CSI style network thriller; there is a quality presentation of the profiling procedure and the investigative procedure of understanding human psyche. Dealing primarily with the serial killers and psychotic killers, the characters and chemistry is outstanding. The stories are thought provoking and not what one would expect to see on network television. Criminal Minds is graphic and at times difficult to watch. Much like the highly respected CSI programs it goes a step beyond though in its themes. I appreciate it because each weekly episode can be seen as a stand alone show.

#7 on the list is yet, another CBS program. It has what may be one of the most enjoyable and entertaining characters of any program on television. That is the character of Patrick Jane played beautifully by Simon Baker. The Mentalist, while having strong ongoing themes, stands alone with each episode. This is a character driven show that is fun, entertaining, and enjoyable to watch. The character and plot line are unique enough that one can’t have too many ongoing expectations as to the plot. This season has had enough twists and turns to keep the show in my top 10 despite it also being an older program. The enduring fan base for The Mentalist is not lost. It is in many ways everything good about what television used to be.

#6 on my list is the first from ABC television. It is a new series with one of my favorite actors, Michael Imperioli formerly of HBO’s The Sopranos. Imperioli plays Detective Louis Finch on the crime drama, Detroit 1-8-7. The opening episode of this one grabbed the viewer, and has kept them through out the season. Not since Hill Street Blues have I seen as shocking an opening episode to a series. The character development in this program, especially Detective Finch and his partner, Detective Damon Washington, played by John Michael Hill has something many motion pictures could learn from, character development. The viewer finds themselves caring about these two and other characters in the program. There are always surprises around the corner, and I suspect there will be more by season’s end that will surprise the viewer.

#5 on my list is the favorite of many. While a pay per view network program, Dexter has in many ways replaced the lost and needed entertainment provided by programs like HBO’s The Sopranos. This Showtime favorite has Showtime doing what many once thought unthinkable, that is taking over as the top cable network for television series. The remarkable thing about Dexter is that one finds themselves rooting for a serial killer. If you don’t know the themes and concepts behind the series you may want to be careful before making too quick a judgment as to the appropriateness of this program. While Dexter Morgan is a serial killer, he is one with more of a conscious than one may realize. In most years Dexter would be my top program, this year it took some time to get into the character development, but once it did, it has taken off and soared. Even with the slow development of the early part of the series, it is still strong enough to be #5 on my list. That says something about this terrific all round cast that many consider the best show on television. The advent of this show alone almost makes it worth it to purchase the Showtime package. The fact that Showtime has another program on my top 10 list makes Showtime a worthwhile purchase.

#4 on my list is another Showtime program, The Big C. Now understand, while a short series it is still strong enough to do two things for me. One is to have the program at #4 on my list, the other is to do as many critics have already stated, have Laura Linney’s name placed on the Emmy for best actress in a television series. One shouldn’t stop there though, while there is an almost certainty of her winning this award, her performance is far from the only outstanding performance. The top 4 of my top 10 is so close that either program could have almost gone in any of those spots, if this series had been longer, it would have been no contest. This series dealt with a character going through terminal cancer, but much more than that. There was everything from rude neighbors, to family, affairs, and learning from mistakes. There was even the exploration of faith and eternity explored in beautiful, touching, thought provoking ways. There was one episode dealing with forgiveness, in of all places, a church that was simply breathtaking. Showtime in this program did everything right. There were more than a few teary moments and Laura Linney, Oliver Platt, Phyllis Somerville, John Hickey, Idris Elba and Gabourey Sidibe made up the best ensemble cast not just in television this year, but the best ensemble cast period. Not only was The Big C refreshing for television programming, it was thought provoking and for many, life changing.

#3 on my list will be for many a shocking surprise, the program on The History Channel is a spinoff series and far more suspenseful, entertaining, and breathtaking than its predecessor, Ice Road Truckers. The program, IRT Deadliest Roads is not only a challenging portrayal of culture, it is a hold your breath program. IRT Deadliest Roads follows truckers from the television series Ice Road Truckers as they drive in India’s Himalayan Mountains. We see the exploits of several truckers driving on roads that are what most would consider undriveable. We also see the exploration of a culture in their treatment of women and road side manners. The next time you get caught up with the headaches of driving the freeway during rush hour, DVR any episode of this program and push play on the DVR, it won’t take long to help you realize, it could be worse. Fortunately, reality television doesn’t get any better than this years IRT Deadliest Roads. We see more than just driving on roads though, we see people who care for each other, stand beside to help each other, and then challenge themselves in their choice of job over family. We see real emotions, and real life situations where the essence of what some thought was right is challenged.

#2 on my list will be a large surprise to many, AMC’s The Walking Dead. Another short series for a television program, but what they pack into this series is far more than a simple Zombie film. This program pays tribute to the George Romero classic Night of the Living Dead. The Walking Dead is well acted, features some of the best special effects, period on television or the big screen, and has a story and character development to boot. This program is not for the kiddies, but neither should it be ignored by those who are opposed to gore, or horror formats. This is more than a gore fest, (which at times it is); it is also an exploration of the human condition and societal issues. When one watches this program, they will likely think of the world of television in the past. Some will be offended that non pay television programming has gone as far as this one has. It airs on Sunday nights and is late enough that children shouldn’t be watching, but older children, with discussion from family will likely get more out of it than many realize, if one looks for the deeper themes. The strength of The Walking Dead is the story and the exploration of today’s society. Unfortunately many won’t stay long enough to see that due to the graphic nature of the program. That is unfortunate because this program has a lot to say, and is at a deserved #2 on my list. If looking for an exploration of commitment to others, the advent of hope, and the need to let others go this program has a lot to say, while at the same time, being entertaining.

#1 is in my opinion, the CBS new show, Blue Bloods. In a simple phrase, Tom Selleck is back, and he is back on top. Blue Bloods follows the exploits of New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, (Tom Selleck) and his family which are all involved in some way in law enforcement. The series does not feature any single character as a primary character, it is more of an ensemble cast and the underlying story of family is the primary reason I enjoy this program. As many likely realize, values of programming are important to me, what a program provides beyond what is seen on screen is one of the primary things that drives me to the program. So far, this season of Blue Bloods has been exceptional.

In each episode of Blue Bloods there have been various ongoing themes which I greatly value. In each episode of the season so far, you see the value of family, including at times, even in the dysfunction, the importance of coming together. We can see that despite the differences that often exist, that coming together, and valuing each other is important. The program does this in a variety of ways, not just in conflict, but in little things often lost. In each episode we see the family together around the dinner table, realizing among themselves the value of family, and the roles of those in the family. We also see a tribute and respect paid to the men and women of law enforcement. While there are undoubtedly those who blacken the eye of law enforcement, it is refreshing to see a program pay obvious tribute to law enforcement and those making the sacrifices to protect others. We also see the importance of faith in the family unit. Not just on occasion, but so far, in every episode we see the family come together to pray, whether around the table or over the casket of a fellow officer killed in battle. The value of prayer and faith is refreshing to see, especially when done in a positive light, not in a preachy way, but a subtle way that will eventually plant the seeds of thought for the viewer to also see the value of faith.

With Blue Bloods not only do we have in my humble opinion the best program of the season, CBS has to be recognized for their outstanding work at providing what is to me, the best network on television. After that, The Discovery Channel and Showtime have a lot to offer, but thankfully it isn’t just these networks and programs that are doing wonderful things, we see other programs continue on HBO like True Blood, and even other networks like ABC. While there are those that still need to catch up, it is refreshing to see television have such an impact on society, not just in the world of entertainment, but with the social needs many have. While the economy is down, we don’t have to be left behind in quality entertainment, we don’t have to be left behind because the programming provided on television has once again, started to have an impact, an impact not just in the ‘free’ entertainment provided at home, but also in quality that is unmatched in many of the theatrical, high cost movies. Sure there are those who are still flocking to the theater, but for some of us, thankfully there is more to do at home with our families in an affordable, enjoyable way. Thankfully, some of those programs like those mentioned above also realize and respect the value of family, even when zombies walk or the police protect, there are things we can all appreciate and value from.

I realize that for many, many of your favorites are left off. We all have our own opinions, our own taste, our own reasons. Feel free to post your thoughts here and enter the discussion, the discussion where we might find out about a new program we haven’t seen before, a program that may just touch us and inspire us in ways we hadn’t imagined.
