The Lion King, Diamond Edition on Blu-ray

Over the years there have been a handful of animated movies that have moved from family fare to classic film. Many of those come from the Disney Library and the new release of The Lion King on Blu-ray DVD on the tails of the recent rerelease of theatrical release and a #1 weekly box office rating shows this film is a timeless classic for a reason; it resonates and endures, not just for a little while, but a lifetime.

Seeing The Lion King in theaters back when it was originally released was a memory I will likely never forget. It was 1994 and I took my young daughter and then very young son to see the movie. My daughter, while older was entertained, and my son, who was around 3 years of age, was also glued to the screen, on top of all of that was the family experience, my wife and I also enjoyed the movie. It had great animation for the children, along with memorable characters but it also had an enjoyable story line for the adults.

It is hard to imagine that animation technology and CGI have evolved as much as it has since the release of the film in 1994. At the time, The Lion King presented state of the art animation, possibly equaled by none. The reality of that quality is no better displayed than how the animation holds up today, especially with the Blu-ray format. The images are crisp, clear, and bright. Another benefit is the high quality of sound on the Blu-ray format. The voice acting of the actors playing their respective parts such as Matthew Broderick (adult Simba), James Earl Jones (Mufasa), Nathan Lane (Timon) and Jeremy Irons as Scar, just to name a few, still stands out. Some of the voice acting and animation to match the characters is among the best Disney has ever offered. On top of all of this is the score and story which is still outstanding.

The premise of the film is one that most people likely already know. The story takes place in Africa where a pride of lions and the animal kingdom is led by Mufasa. Musfasa has a jealous brother named Scar. Scar is deceitful and seeks to inherit the kingdom by any means necessary. As fate has it, Mufasa has a son, named Simba who will inherit the kingdom. Simba in his innocence listens to his uncle and this unfortunately leads to the death of Mufasa. Scar talks Simba into going into the dark lands where he will escape the punishment of the animal kingdom for what he thinks is his own role in his father’s death. While there, he comes across two friends, a warthog named Pumba and a meerkat named Timon, (Ernie Sabella.) These three embark on a journey of growing up and in the process learning to do what is right.

In the journey of Simba, we see him grow up and become a lion worthy to be king. He recognizes the need to make things right and to follow his call in life. One of the unique attributes of a Disney film is that while targeting children, with animation and fun characters, there is a willingness to not only show the good, but to also show the dark side of life, including revenge, difficulty, and even ultimately, death. It is in their willingness to show these things that the adult viewer can relate to the characters and story. Simba is memorable for a reason; we grow with him and ultimately understand his journey into adulthood. There are difficulties in life, but there is also a need to overcome.

There is a reason The Lion King is the best selling home entertainment release of all time, it delivers with a story that is eternal. The story is based in part on stories from the Bible, including Moses and Joseph, we see the concepts of being outcast, and then the return where justice is served and leadership qualities are developed. In real life my faith tells me to persevere. It is a concept Simba eventually learns, he recognizes the reality of a higher power in his life and the need to submit to the calling on his life. While there has been tragedy, it is through the concept of perseverance that strength is developed and things of value accomplished. The need to hear these themes, to be reminded of them is a likely reason parents took their children to see it in theaters to the extent they did during its recent release. We recognize that in a hopeless world, we need leaders who persevere. These characters were created with some of the stories from the Bible in mind. It hopefully will have some going back to the original stories to learn about characters like Moses, Joseph, and even Jesus, who all persevered to the point of doing something of value not just for their families, but the world around them. In those lessons of discovering our gifts and talents, we can be inspired to find the hope we need to persevere in our own lives.

I loved The Lion King in 1994 when it was released, I still love it. The transfer quality onto Blu-ray is outstanding and Disney again provides so many quality special features they can’t all be mentioned. For the film buff like me, one will be very satisfied with the product. The only drawback I can think of is this product is going to only be available for a limited time. For those who have followed Disney, they know that when Disney says a limited time, they mean it. I suspect it will be hard to find this product during the Holidays, but I could be wrong. If a fan of the movie, and wanting to give it as a gift this year, I wouldn’t take the chance, Buy it right away, it is worth every penny it costs. I reviewed the Diamond Edition which includes not only the Blu-ray version but also a regular DVD. There are a variety of packages available, all worth the cost.

Dumbo on Blu-Ray, 70th Anniversary Special Edition

There are some movies that pass the test of time; Dumbo is one of those movies. Disney has just released this classic on Blu-Ray DVD and the question for most will be this, is it worth it? Let me tell you, as a fan of Disney, and especially as a fan of classic animation, this product is well worth it and we now have the opportunity to see Dumbo like never before.

There was the magic age of Disney where it seemed like everything they touched turned to gold, Dumbo is among that era, and the fact that Walt Disney himself had his hand involved in this is no coincidence. The fact that a film released in 1941 would still have appeal to a small child today, and at the same time, entertain their parents or grandparents is a testament to the reason Dumbo is a classic. This animated tale includes valuable lessons in everything from family, to friendship, and from bullying to obtaining dreams. There is more though and the reality that it is all included in only 64 minutes is outstanding. Some would consider Dumbo a part of Disney Gold, count me among them.

For those not familiar with the story, Dumbo is the new baby delivery to Mrs. Jumbo the elephant. He is delivered by the stork, and early on we see how much mothers love their children, whether a lion or a chimpanzee, parents from all walks of life love their children, (or at least they should.) Unfortunately Mrs. Jumbo doesn’t get her baby on time, he comes a little late. We see her go from sadness to joy, back to love and protector as she discovers that Dumbo has an apparent defect, he has giant ears. In a moment of Dumbo being bullied and her trying to protect him she is put into captivity and separated from her baby. This scene, some years later, still brings tears to most that see the love of Mrs. Jumbo for her son when they are separated. Fortunately, Dumbo is befriended by Timothy Q. Mouse who takes Dumbo under his wing, and in the process, helps Dumbo learn to accept himself.

I used the word ‘magic’ earlier, along with the word ‘outstanding.’ I don’t use either of those words lightly. What happens on screen, especially with the time frame given, is nothing short of either of these two words. We see an outstanding, magical story that has many life lessons for those watching. The 64 minutes of this presentation may be as close to 64 minutes of perfection ever put on screen. We see everything from plot development, incredible voice acting, brilliant animation, (not the CGI we are used to, but real animation) and life affirming, eternal messages that will last as long as movies exist. I have seen movies that have lasted for hours that were unable to come close to the character development we see here. I have seen entire series that have said less in their hours than Dumbo presents in its 1 hour. I have seen less entertaining films, that get boring and yet after numerous viewings I have never gotten bored with this story, yes, I use the words ‘magic’ and ‘outstanding’ with intent.

There are so many lessons that one could touch on with Dumbo, but one I have thought little of in the past is the importance of friendship and encouragement we see in the character of Timothy Q. Mouse, not just him though, but in other characters like the crows who encourage Dumbo to find a way to put his giant ears to good use. Those lessons of encouragement, of befriending the outcast, the one who is bullied is a message and theme just as important today as it was in 1941 when this movie was released. In a world where we see bullying and making fun of others played out so much, to know that a lesson of friendship can be learned, appreciated, and at the same time, entertain even for a 2 year old is refreshing. That refreshing concept is the concept I appreciated as I watched the movie with my 18-month-old granddaughter who was entertained throughout the film. I understood, those are lessons I will be able to revisit with her over and over again as she gets older, not just those messages though, but others that are presented in the film such as the love and appreciation of family. The spiritual lessons of how we are to love each other, to see the positive in each other, despite those things we consider faults in others is another life lesson of value. If we could learn to see the benefit and potential in others in the same way God sees those things in us we would be in such a better place. Of course real friends can help with that process. We can learn, whether the one needing encouragement, or the one giving encouragement, there is benefit to loving each other and treating each other like family. Dumbo and Timothy both learn those lessons and we learn along with them.

One of the things I normally like to comment on is the quality of the DVD and the special features. In those aspects, Disney, with Dumbo, delivers. While we have a small screen format as opposed to a widescreen presentation, the colors and sound are more vibrant and brilliant as ever. Disney has included some special features including artwork around the framing of the film to fill out the television screen. I also found myself enjoying as much as ever the abundant special features that Disney brings to this product. In the past Disney has mostly been a hit in the special features they present; sometimes there is a let down; that is not the case with Dumbo. While the navigation bars are not the easiest to navigate, there are numerous features that I have not seen before which make this DVD a definite must own for those owning Blu-ray players. I would go so far as to say this; the purchase of a DVD player would be worth it if buying it to watch this movie. One will quickly find out there are ample features on the Blu-ray DVD’s, (generally speaking) but when finding a blu-ray like this one, you realize, your purchase of the player, plus the extra cost for the DVD are well worth it because it isn’t often we get the opportunity to enjoy a magical, refreshing, outstanding film and product like this version of Disney’s Dumbo.

Bambi II On Blu-ray

One of the classic films of all time is the Disney film, Bambi. Just released on Blu-ray DVD is the sequel Bambi II. The film released in 2006 is the follow up to the original which was recorded in 1942. Despite the difference in time regarding the release of the sequel, the story in Bambi II starts soon after the death of Bambi’s mother.

Bambi’s father, The Great Prince, voiced by Patrick Stewart, is a single father facing the conflict of raising a son. Bambi goes through many issues that others may be going through, as a result Bambi II is more than just a coming of age story, it looks at the relationship of single fathers and the conflicts they go through in raising a child on their own. Through a series of events, Bambi and The Great Prince learn to realize the need for each other, but not just each other, the community around them.

Over the years I have been quick to praise Disney for their outstanding work, especially in the field of Blu-ray transfer. Bambi II has a great story that is mature enough for adults and children to watch and learn from. The voicing of the characters of the film is quite good, especially Alexander Gould, the voice of Bambi, Brendon Baerg as Thumper, and Nicky Jones as Flower. The story is well crafted. What is lacking isn’t so story, but the magic animation Disney is noted for. There are several good scenes with quality transfer but those are few and far between. The quality is more of what may be expected of a television program than a DVD or movie release. Whatever the expectation, one who has viewed Disney DVD’s in the past will agree this is not as good in its animation.

One of the strengths of the DVD is the story and in that story the understanding of the two primary characters, Bambi and his father The Great Prince. While the story could have been a tad longer, the basics of the characters are intact. One of the weaknesses is the movie plays to the attention span of small children too much. It would have been possible to add some moments appreciated by small children, and developing the characters for the adult audience. For those who have gone through single parenthood, there is enough information but for those wanting to understand the issues, more could have been worthwhile.

Just as in real life, lessons for both father and son are learned through experience, sometimes, even the bad experiences. We see this transpire in a natural and real way, if seeing the story as an allegory. Thankfully, the ultimate lessons doesn’t come at the cost we of the original Bambi film. That doesn’t mean there isn’t tragedy involved, and it doesn’t mean there aren’t lessons to be learned. While some of the events may be difficult for the very young viewer, there are ample opportunities for discussion between child and parent and due to the nature of the events and growth process within those characters it is likely discussion will need to take place.

We unfortunately live in a society where family is becoming more fragmented. Disney recognized that I believe when they decided to do this sequel. The struggles of single parenthood are at its root the theme of this film. While there are difficulties in single parenting, Disney in the character of The Great Prince recognizes that the concept of love within the family, even in broken or single parent families is important and needed. Ultimately that love is transferred not just from a father to a son but from a son to a father. That love involves a sacrifice where one is willing to go beyond the norm. We see that sacrificial love throughout the Bible, a love that reflects not only the goodness of God, but the goodness and love to be communicated to our fellow human. While there is at times conflict, the ultimate desire is to love God and each other. Through the experiences, which require sacrifice, we can get to the place where there is not only understanding, but a life worthwhile for each of us.

I find myself having mixed opinions about Bambi II. I loved the story, although it could have been longer than the 74 minutes of the film, but I was disappointed in the quality of animation. I expect more from Disney and this product just didn’t deliver. While there are some special features on the DVD, I also found them lacking. If purchasing the DVD, I would recommend the purchase of just the standard version of the film as there is nothing worth the additional expense of the Blu-ray. It is nice to know that Disney is offering a value price of the Blu-ray that comes complete with the standard DVD. If able to find the standard DVD in a stand alone package, that is what I would recommend.

I still find myself reluctantly recommending this product on the power of the story and the well acted out voicing. It isn’t the best, but a less than average Disney product is still better than the standard run of the mill animated or children’s product. This one isn’t much better, but it is better on story alone. For that reason, it is worth owning and seeing several times, especially for those coming from single parent families and fathers.

Blue Planet Seas of Life on Blu-Ray DVD

Blue Planet Seas of Life put out by The Discovery Planet is an incredible testimony to not only the marine life of the planet and her surroundings, but the potential of the Blu-Ray format. This Blu-Ray DVD set takes a look at oceanic life and circumstances in a visual and informational way like no other documentary of its type, outside of the Discovery and Planet Earth series.

The Blue Planet set consists of eight 50 minute episodes that tell some of the history and events surrounding the ocean. Under the premise that the ocean is one of the largest, misunderstood anomalies of our planet this BBC series sets out to explore and educate. What transpires is a wonderfully narrated series by David Attenborough with stunning images captured in the high definition Blu-Ray format. The images are so good in fact that this is one of those must have series, not just for educational purposes, but the imagery provided.

Through out the eight episodes Attenborough tells of various aspects of marine life. There is no set formula or method in the episode index of the series, although each of the eight episodes focuses on a common theme, ranging from The Ocean World to The Tidal Seas and from the Deep crevices of the ocean to the Coral Seas. In the magnitude of the episodes, we see the reality of the depth of the seas, and while a great deal of information is provided, one thing we are left with is the understanding that there is still much more we don’t understand.

As a human species we are challenged to think about and try to understand, there is more to this planet than just us. This series drove home for me the complexity of not just our universe, but the complexity of our planet. The stunning visual images help bring home the realism of what we see on screen. While it is just short of being there and experiencing the events for ourselves, what we experience through the complexity of the eight episodes will still likely be mesmerizing. As I watched the series, I couldn’t help but think of the likelihood that there has to be more to this planet. There has to be a more complex creator than many give credit for or think about. I was also reminded of a concept often referred to in religious circles as the Genesis Mandate. The Genesis Mandate takes a spiritual perspective of the need and importance of the human species in understanding the role of a creator, the human species responsibility in taking care of the planet, and then our appreciation of the planet God created. There is the understood concept that there is a purpose behind all of God’s creation and the reality that while God saw it as being good, we need to also show an appreciation of the planet in such a way as we are moved to take care of it.

The images and visual aspects captured here are nothing short of amazing. While there is no human actors, no human story lines, the methods of filming, the imagery and stories displayed in the life of the ocean is in itself an outstanding story. I personally appreciated the lack of human involvement in the story telling, outside of course of the script and narration provided. In some regards, I would have appreciated more special features on the DVD series, but I can understand that with this series being done as well as it was, there was really no need. There is a good feature on The Making of Blue Planet that is insightful, but this is one of the rare times that I won’t blast a DVD for the lack of special features because there really isn’t such a need for it.

There is not a great deal that needs to be said about this series, other than; it has to be seen to be truly appreciated. I suspect schools across the globe will, and have used this series to educate others from the smallest of children, to the most advanced of graduate marine biology student. It is that type DVD; it has something for everyone, and can be appreciated by most anyone who has an awareness and interest in the oceans of the planet and their role in the survival of all species. If owning a Blu-Ray player, you won’t be disappointed, and I suspect it is a Blu-Ray that will make frequent visits to your own DVD player.

Upside

In a world where many families are looking for family friendly movies it is nice to see a mature, coming of age love story like Upside. Upside is not just a coming of age love story though, it is a story where a young man has to come to discover his own purpose, his own journey, a journey where faith comes in and brings about an unexpected change.

Upside is the first feature film by Spyplane Films. Starring Randall Bentley as Solomon White, best known for his role in the television hit series Heroes. Solomon is a high school senior who is a stand out lacrosse player. He is on the radar of numerous Ivy League schools and the Naval Academy. He is trying to break away from a former girlfriend, having some difficulty in class, having trouble with his single mother who is overbearing, and looking for shortcuts not only in school but in life. He has a tragic accident while playing a game and his vision is impacted. After the accident he sees everything upside down and has horrendous headaches. While attending a public speech given by 20-year-old Wren Woods, played by Leah Sims, he ends up developing a friendship with her where he not only takes on a journey where he is searching for meaning, but a journey where he searches to find himself. Along the way is a literature teacher, Mrs. Buck, played beautifully by Taylor St. Clair. Mrs. Buck is a teacher who cares, and who goes out of her way to help her students. How Solomon responds to those who become a part of his life, the decisions he makes and who he listens to will determine his future.

Upside lacks in a lot of areas, among those is a cast which can deliver the goods to make this a very good movie. The direction given by Ken Horstmann, who also wrote the script, does as much as is possible with the talent he has. I was impressed by the talents of Bentley and especially that of Taylor St. Clair. While other actors do a decent job, especially for a film of this nature, it is subpar. There are times the plot gets a little preachy, and the movie certainly has a religious intent. On this point, notice I said a little preachy. I actually appreciated the reality of the movie and it focuses on a pretty good story. While religion plays a part, it is not done in a threatening way; it is respectful and causes the viewer to reflect without feeling like they had just attended a Baptist Revival.

Horstmann does a good job at developing the story and moving it along. This is the type of story that reminded me of a television series, and in fact, would make a pretty good series, especially with the New England feel. It is also quite interesting because both primary characters have what many would consider a disability. While White has an injury brought on by a sporting accident, his love interest in the story, Wren Woods is permanently and totally blind. The relationship that develops is based on numerous things, and this is a good reminder of what can develop in real relationships off screen. It is also nice to see these age groups presented in a positive way, with potential to do the right thing.

While Upside has as backdrop, people of faith, it is presented in a respectful way. Solomon White, despite some mistakes, a temper, and an attitude at times, is deep down a good kid. We see this especially when given the opportunity to cheat on his girlfriend on a college visit, yet he chooses to remain loyal. There are other examples we see illustrated such as a teacher who is devoutly Christian, yet she respects the public school setting she is teaching in. We also see a real and non threatening way how one can live their faith, and how it can bring about needed change.

Upside is a good first effort. I wouldn’t mind showing it to my family, and I would think many families where faith is important will enjoy this DVD. There is some good advice for those in the age group this film is intended for. While not a great film, it is a little better than average, and certainly better than many religious themed movies due to the respect it gives the viewer. I would have liked a better developed script, and a little more focus on the technical aspects of the film. While not a film I would want to watch over and over again, I would consider renting the DVD and enjoying it at home with the family. What you decide to do, well that is up to you. There is an upside though; you will get some good themes and decent reminders in this family friendly movie that not all has to end up bad, and that some of those searching for answers, may just find them.

Open Water, Open Water Adrift DVD Blu-Ray Double Feature

I love the water, I love movies, I love Blu-Ray DVD’s, I love movies about the water, I love good horror, I wish I could say I love the double package DVD of Open Water and Open Water Adrift, but the truth is, I don’t.

Blu-Ray DVD’s are generally worth the few extra dollars they cost, you get a lot more in sound and quality in images. Blu-Ray players coming down in price recently makes for a worthwhile purchase. For many, like me, they find themselves checking out some of the double features on Blu-Ray to save a few dollars. One of the upcoming releases on the double feature disc is the Open Water series based on true events. Many consider these films as fitting into the horror genera so I figured it would be worth giving these films from 2003, and 2006 a first time look.

The premise of the two films is that horrid events lead up to individuals being left in the ocean to face their own demise. In Open Water, we see two scuba divers accidentally left behind in the ocean through a series of events, and in Open Water Adrift we see six friends celebrating a reunion of sorts, along with the birthday of a friend overboard a yacht, unable to get back on board due to not having a ladder. While the themes are largely the same, the movies are uniquely different.

In Open Water we see a horror story, not just in the story itself, but the way it is told. Having to sit through the one hour and twenty minutes of this movie may have been the most horrific and horrid movie experience of my life. While the special features and makers of this movie dwell on the aspects of indie film, I have seen and personally worked with several indie films and filmmakers who are far more deserving of having their work make it to the big screen. Everything from the direction, camera angles, acting, and story are enough to have had me wishing the two principles in the movie would die sooner than later so I could quit watching the movie. There is an underlying theme in both films that causes one to think about what they would do in the last hours of life, how one would respond to loved ones or friends if with those loved ones and friends. Unfortunately in Open Water, these themes are so poorly explored there was little value I could find. It would have been better if for the larger part of the movie there would have been other characters to explore and more of a story to watch. Of course there is value in the inspiration and the process of how an indie film can find national distribution and a large audience as is illustrated in the special features, but that isn’t the film itself, although it is a part of the product.

In Open Water Adrift, we see a poor movie come close to looking like a masterpiece due to the horrific nature of its predecessor. Here we see some 20 minutes of character development and the six characters play off of each other throughout the film. There is an effective use of flashback sequences that helps the viewer sympathize with one of the characters. There is a fair exploration of the role of religion on individuals when they are close to death, or facing what appears to be certain death.

Throughout Open Water Adrift we see persons either turning to faith, remembering faith, or questioning faith as they face death. We see one character who is reminded of the cross and the conflict and pain that came about through the image of that cross. We see pain as a part of her past, her present, and see that it will be a part of her future.

Another character turns to the Lords Prayer as a means of hope and salvation. She is seeks peace despite actions that show how little her faith meant to her in her past. In the end, she realizes the importance of faith, but in the words of another character, there is the question of where is God in the reality that millions of people die without God’s intervention. There is the question of why she and her friends should believe that God would hear their prayers when it is clear there are so many whose prayers aren’t heard.

Many seeking spiritual truth will find those questions troubling. Many people of faith seem to ignore the reality of the world around them. The reality is that for some people, their preconceived notions don’t work. There are innocent people killed in war, dying from starvation and more. There seems to be people isolated by their environment who have difficulty distinguishing the difference between reality, faith, and perceived notions of what their faith is supposed to be.

Open Water Adrift was worth a view, but compared to many movies on the big screen, it still falls short. I wish I could give it a higher recommendation, but truth is I have seen better television movies.

Overall, I wasn’t a little disappointed in this double feature Blu-Ray DVD, I was extremely disappointed. From the sound quality, to story, and from the transfer quality, to special features, there was little of value. Unfortunately, the only aspect of the Blu-Ray that was worth watching in high quality was the previews of other movies and some of the special features of Open Water. I would be okay with watching Open Water Adrift, but would enjoy the conversations started from the questions and points mentioned above more. Other than that, I would say get a bag of microwave popcorn, pull out an old VHS version of Jaws, sit down, and enjoy. The horror from that movie will be far more enjoyable and thought provoking than the horror of having to sit through these two movies.

George A. Romero's Knightriders With Ed Harris

I have written in the past that one of my favorite directors is George A. Romero. Recently while looking for films of Romero’s I haven’t seen I came across a gem of a movie named Knightriders. While the film was originally released in 1981 it is a film worth review and notice. As people who love film, sometimes when looking for something good to view, we are privileged to live in a time when we can access older films we haven’t seen or heard of. For me, Knightriders is such a film, and if a fan of quality B movies you haven’t heard of, you won’t do much better than this.

Knightriders takes an unusual twist for George Romero who is known for his zombie and gore movies. Knightriders is a film that follows a Renaissance Troop who has as a desire, to live in the spirit of the Renaissance. There is good King Billy played by Ed Harris and his myriad of knights including actors such as Tom Savini, Gary Jahti, and numerous others who have been in many of Romero’s films. Individuals like Ken Foree are also there along with some wonderful cameos from such people as Stephen King.

There is a unique twist though to this fair story, a unique attribute that adds to the story itself. The story follows this group of individuals who live in the 1980’s as opposed to the Middle Ages. Instead of horses, they ride motorcycles, and they fight their battles and participate in their games as they take their journey from town to town entertaining all of those who would enjoy. While there is the opportunity and challenge to accept financial gain, the desire of living in the spirit and attitude of the time frame which they represent is more important to them. This is the story played out in Knightriders, the conflict of the challenges placed on one through commercialism versus the desire to follow ones dreams, loves, and passions. King Billy and the faithful see the potential harm in following the pursuit and love of money versus the need and desire to care for something one can’t buy, the concept of honor and family.

For a movie that never garnished much fan support, Knightriders may be among the best ‘unknown’ or ‘little known’ films I have personally seen. This now cult classic has the opportunity to garnish even more fan support, especially with recent releases by Romero and remakes of such movies as The Crazies. Hopefully he will garnish fans that will value his true genius, not just in the horror genera, but in his ability to make movies of any style.

Knightriders had the unfortunate happenstance of being released during the same time as the popular Medieval film Excalibur, and while it garnished better reviews from such sources as Newsweek, it never garnished the fan support at the time of release. I think largely due to the smaller advertising budgets but that will never be known. Fortunately, this well acted film, featuring the wonderful Ed Harris and others like Tom Savini who is well known for his work with special effects and being in various cult films can now be seen. Savini actually gets to act in this film but we also get to see some incredible stunt work throughout the film. This well developed, true to the concepts of King Arthur tale is a wonderful modernization of the era that originally drew Romero’s attention while attending an actual Renaissance Fair. While there are some lackluster edits in the film, Romero gives tremendous direction to this unique concept, and it highlights his true abilities as a director and writer. One of the fun things about this movie is that while it was released in 1981, the story holds up and entertains.

In Knightrider King Billy understands the concept of being true to ones goals, dreams, and the simplicity of life. He understands the need to have people be together, to love and support each other. He is challenged though, his journey includes a journey that has as a crown, “a crown of thorns.” He is not just a king; he is a savior to a group of people who realize their own individual need for community. There is the story of loyalty, love, dedication, and the need of family which is ultimately what this group is, a family of misfits who have yet to find joy in the surroundings they live in. It is why they form their own community, it is why that ultimately, when challenged, they realize what they have, but sometimes it is only when you loose what you have that you realize what it was you had to start with. While these people live in a modern world, they ultimately find joy in following what many consider old concepts. It is if you will a form of church. It is a type of church that understands the value of following a belief, while being committed to each other as opposed to the potential of commercialism. They ultimately understand real riches come in relationship, not per say dollars. Real community comes in being with each other, not in a world so focused on self consumption. They also realize that sometimes real opportunity, real love, comes with real sacrifice, sacrifice that is not always so pleasant to bear.

One of the fun things about this is the directors and actors commentary that comes attached to the DVD. There was no doubt this crew loved making this movie. Savini talks about how it was one of the best summers of his life and that Romero was essentially making, “a very personal story about fighting the dragon of commercialism.” While this is an incredibly enjoyable and thought provoking well made film there are some things that could have been done a little better. There are certain relational concepts that could have been done better, and one has to almost watch this twice to catch all of the symbolism. A little research after watching the film initially, then watching again will provide some insight into how well this film is made.

Romero adds to the legend of his genius in Knightriders. While it isn’t a perfect movie, it is an exceptionally good movie that is totally different than many who are knowledgeable of Romero would know. Over the years, this quirky director has been loyal to his actors, and technical crews, you hear that illustrated in the directors commentary cut, and you see that in many of his movies. Romero, unfortunately due to the style of film he has made is not recognized in the way he should be for his abilities. I think more movies like Knightrider would have helped with that but I think Romero don’t really care so much what people think. Just like King Billy, he follows his own heart, he follows his own path, and fortunately some of us have been there for the ride.

Overall, as a cult classic DVD, this film is one you will want to buy if a fan of Romero. Even if not a fan, I think most will enjoy this movie, it makes for a wonderful Friday or Saturday evening viewing at home, and a good movie to have friends over to discuss the concepts of the movie. Better yet, you can purchase this movie for a very reasonable price. I actually purchased mine for less than $8 and I have personally already seen this movie three times. It is that good. If looking for a fun surprise, you can’t do much better than this one. You’ll see a good story, with a good message, and a thought provoking plot to go along with some good action sequences and some rather remarkable stunts. For those who expect the gore and guts, you will be disappointed, but if expecting the excellent and wonderful social commentary that Romero is known for, even the Romero fans of such films as Night of the Living Dead will be pleased. Now enough for the review, time for me to go back to those special features on the DVD.

Snoopy's Reunion

Charles M. Schulz, the creator of the popular comic strip, Peanuts was simply put, a literary genius. I can think of few artists who had the impact of Schulz. The television specials of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Snoopy and the rest of the gang are legendary. From the Great Pumpkin to the Christmas Story, most of us have lived and grown up watching the enduring stories of Charlie Brown. Thankfully a long time favorite Snoopy’s Reunion, along with special features including Flashbeagle and a documentary of the original voices of Charlie Brown make a wonderful package in a newly mastered DVD. I was anxious to watch the DVD, and found myself enjoying not only these older stories, but especially the documentary of the original cast members’ reunion at Com Con.

The remastered version of this DVD is exceptional and while the older animation styles may not blow everyone away, the originality of story will keep each fan of Peanuts happy. One of the benefits of the extra features is the discovery of the techniques used by Schulz and legendary director Bill Melendez. The ability to find and direct children in the original roles was genius. Despite originally being told that the use of non actor children wouldn’t work, Melendez and Schulz understood the importance of portraying the innocence of children. It was in their portrayal of the innocence of children that we all discovered something about the truths evident in life, not just for children, but adults through the stories of Charlie Brown and his friends.

In the stories presented on the DVD we have an exploration of Snoopy. We find out about this self-centered, yet, loving little beagle, from his past to the importance of being himself. In many ways we see our own stories, our own struggles and that is a part of the beauty of the characters created by Schulz. We all try to be something we aren’t at times, and it is when we find ourselves that we find our ability to be effective.

Snoopy goes through the struggles of losing family, and yet through those struggles also finding out what is really important to him. He like many of us has to find himself and the struggle of finding oneself is one that can be a lifelong challenge. The simple conclusions that Snoopy, and the other characters come to are a part of the beauty of these stories. It is in trying to be like others that we often lose sight of who we really are. It isn’t in becoming like others that we find our meaning, it is in finding ourselves. It is amazing at what a little beagle, names Snoopy can teach us in those regards.

Charles Schulz was a deeply spiritual man, especially so in his earlier years. He approached faith from a realistic and often times humanistic perspective. He openly admitted using the themes of his faith in his characters and in his stories. Many of those simple themes of love of family, respect for authority, and others are addressed here as well as through the characters of Snoopy and his family.

I enjoyed this DVD. Surprisingly, my favorite part of the DVD wasn’t so much the stories but the documentary that explored the lives and attitudes of the original characters who portrayed the voices of Charlie Brown on the television shows. Getting to see the faces behind the characters was a rarity that I had personally not experienced. Don’t get me wrong, the background stories of Snoopy were entertaining and enjoyable, but my favorite part of Peanuts was always Charlie Brown. Snoopy was a character that I didn’t find as enjoyable due to his lack of humility. The background of how he came to be Charlie Brown’s dog was enjoyable and actually quite entertaining.

At regular purchase prices, this DVD may be a little disappointing for some unless they are a pure fan of the comic strip. It is short in duration and don’t really fit the criteria for me for ownership due to the lack of time and special features. Yet it would be a very worthwhile rental. If you have fans of the comic in your family, or if you want to teach the importance of family to your children, this could be a video worth owning. That value of family is an attribute well worth teaching to. This video could compliment this concept, and the simplicity of story used by Charles Schulz is well done. We don’t always need complicated story to teach important lessons. Schulz understood that, and I for one am grateful for his contribution.
