Salvation Boulevard on DVD

Imagine a mega church, with thousands of members, having a debate on the reality of God VS Atheism with a prominent pastor and a prominent Atheist. Unfortunately a tragedy happens in an after debate get together, the Atheist is accidently shot, the pastor has to find a way to continue the building of his new mega church and in the process, decides that the sacrificial lamb, much like the character of Isaac in the Bible must be sacrificed. That sacrificial lamb, a former Dead Head as of the Grateful Dead Dead Head and new convert has to save his life and in the salvation of his own life, he can hopefully save to his new found faith in God. Unfortunately, those he now associates with, his new wife, friends and others are so into religion and the church they can’t see anything negative as truth when it comes to the critique of their pastor, church, or faith. Consequently, the Dead Head will need an act of God to get him out of the mess he is in.

Salvation Boulevard has an all-star ensemble cast including Pierce Brosnan as mega pastor Reverend Dan Day, Greg Kinnear as newly converted Dead Head Carl Vanderveer and Jennifer Connelly, his wife and church devotee, Gwen. This movie, while far from perfect, offers some thought provoking insight into the world of religion and the way religion often misrepresents God and those dedicated to following him through their involvement in church. The film while well acted comes up somewhat short on direction and story. There is so much more that could be said and so many ways, the story could have been better developed. That doesn’t take away from some of the entertainment value but it does keep it from being a very good movie to being just an interesting and thought provoking movie.

In Salvation Boulevard we see an opening scene that looks like it could have come out of any number of American Mega Churches, churches where attendance is in the thousands. While not disrespectful, we see a debate between two scholars and authors, one a Pastor of the mega church, the other a prominent Atheist played by Ed. Harris. After the debate the two, along with a parishioner meet with the Atheist to discuss a possible new book. The Atheist is accidently shot and a massive cover-up takes place. The pastor and some of his congregation, expecting the Atheist to have died attempt to set up the innocent by stander and new convert, Carl Vanderveer. What transpires next is a comedic romp where Carl attempts to prove his innocence while at the same time, having his faith challenged by the actions he observes.

While this particular DVD has a very good cast, none of the characters are as well defined or developed as Carl Vanderveer. We actually see some of his conflicts and struggles. While the other characters including Pierce Brosnan do a good job, we just see little character development in them. It is one of the things that distracts from this particular film.

I suspect there will be many people of faith who have issues with this movie. That is sad. The movie does not attack the concepts of faith; in fact it affirms them, especially so if you see in the very end that it is God who sets the captives and prisoners free from the chains that bind them. The issue isn’t God; it is those who speak on behalf of God while having their own self interest in mind. In that regard, I found Salvation Boulevard exceptional. There was some concern as to the intent of the film makers, but much like an older film with Steve Martin in Leap of Faith, while not done nearly as well Salvation Boulevard recognizes the ability and reality of God and his superiority over many of his followers. The concepts of selfishness, deceit, and lies among the Christians in this movie are clearly presented, but depending on what book of the Bible you are reading, you will also see the same types of characteristics being presented. In fact, the Bible clearly warns its followers to keep their eyes on Jesus. While there are good people that often fall into doing wrong things, that doesn’t negate the power of God or the ability of others to forgive. There is a danger in placing ones faith in humanity, we have and ultimately will if we haven’t, fail.

While Salvation Boulevard isn’t a great movie, it is okay, and it does raise some rather good questions worthy of discussion and thought. I was disappointed though, the DVD has no special features and there is really nothing exceptional about this film where I could encourage one purchase it. I could recommend one watch it via a cheap rental or queue on their streaming programming. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value, just not enough to justify a purchase of the product.

Hall Pass on Blu-ray

Bobby and Peter Farrelly are two brothers that seem to have a knack for making what many consider obnoxious and obscene movies. They also have a knack for making movies that some consider modern day parables. There is a new movie on DVD, Hall Pass that fits both of those criteria and while it reminds me a great deal of the feelings I felt with the movie The 40-Year Old Virgin, there are enough unique attributes to it that I expect the DVD release will attract a growing audience.

The premise of Hall Pass is quite simple; two married couples have over their years of marriage gotten caught up in the monotony of marriage, including sex. There are the consistent wondering eyes from two husbands, Rick, played by Owen Wilson and Fred played by Jason Sudeikis. Rick’s wife Maggie, played by Jenna Fisher has grown cold towards her husband. While she has fallen into suburbia, complete with the kids and nice home, she has obtained many of her dreams but has become cold in the bedroom. Rick has wondering hormones and desires his wife sexually. Fred on the other hand is married to Grace, played by Christina Applegate. Grace is similar to Maggie; the difference is that Fred has found some dangerous solutions to his problems. While he thinks he is pulling things over on Grace, she is fully aware of his actions.

One night during a poker game Maggie over hears on the baby monitor the ‘guys’ talking about getting hooked up with other women. The wives later decides with the advice from a friend to give the guys a ‘Hall Pass’, or a one week exemption from marriage. They can do as they wish, no strings or questions attached for the week. What neither of the couples realizes is that not only does a Hall Pass constitute freedom for the husbands, but also for the wives. In the exploration for freedom not only are their some funny moments but also poignant moments regarding relationship and marriage.

One of the things that make Hall Pass work is the Farrelly Brothers know how to make an audience laugh. They provide quality direction that has most everything working. From the quality of acting, to lighting, and from the soundtrack to the editing process it all works. The excellence of the brothers seems to be their ability to get real life moments into a movie while at the same time addressing real life issues. Many of those moments are gross, yet, funny. There is also the ability to develop characters in unique situations that add to the enjoyment of the story.

One of the things I have liked about the Farrelly Brothers over the years is their ability to not only develop their primary characters, but also their ability to have memorable minor characters in a move. Here we see each of the primary characters develop in such a way that while we are laughing at their experiences we care about the situations they are in. I found myself caring so much that I was talking to the screen, (one of the benefits of watching the DVD.) While there is humor in each character there are some funny moments that come about as a result of the minor characters. Included here are some wonderful bits by Richard Jenkins who plays the part of Coakley, a legendary womanizer, and Derek Waters who is hilarious as Brent.

Many are offended by movies of this nature, including the methods used in telling the story. I am not so put off by it because like it or not, the bottom line is important themes are being addressed with people who may not get those themes any other way. There are so many levels of spirituality addressed in a Farrelly Brothers movie that it is hard to figure out where to start. I will touch on one I felt strongly about in the movie.

In Hall Pass there seems to be a level of distrust which exists in many marriages and relationships. In that place one comes to a place where one forgets about things that are important, such as the love and trust that should come about in a meaningful relationship. All through the movie we see individuals who have forgotten about relationship. There are distractions, sometimes even good distractions like children that take one away from their original love. Another problem comes when the focus of what is important is placed on self as opposed to those around you. It is when one takes their eyes off of the one that is to be loved, and focuses on self that trouble ensues. Unfortunately, that is the way it is in life. I am reminded in my own faith of the need to love my God with my all, and to love my neighbor as myself. It is in the way I love others that I ultimately love God, and in that place, find God’s love for me. For many that love starts at home.

I have to admit, there are many laugh out loud moments in Hall Pass. I liked the characters and I liked the story. I know many will take offense at the material. There are times, as is the norm with their films, that some of the things portrayed on screen are either on the border of being offensive, or clearly crosses the line. There are some crude moments that for even me were difficult to watch, especially in the extended cut of the DVD. I liked the movie though and think it is one worth watching if one can be okay with the crude moments. For many, just as I think the brothers intend, there are ample thought provoking moments that can lead to good, meaningful discussions.

As to the DVD, while worth owning, it still falls somewhat short in some of the features I look for. There is an extended cut of the movie that is even cruder than the theatrical version and a few special features including a deleted scene and a gag reel. The transfer for Blu-ray is quite nice and there is a nice soundtrack which accompanies the movie. While this isn’t the best Farrelly Brother movie, it is still entertaining and enjoyable. If bothered by sexual content, discussion, and portrayals, it likely isn’t for you, but much like The 40-Year Old Virgin there are some really good themes that will have an impact on many watching this movie.

Bringing Up Bobby

As a part of my obligation in reviewing movies, I at times offend some people. There are the people of faith who are offended that I find good in movies they may not like, others who may not like that I am critical of certain films. With that in mind, I believe I have an obligation to truth, my faith, and my readers. That means when I see something I don’t like, I need to be honest. That said, sit back, and endure.

I recently screened the new release of the DVD, Bringing Up Bobby. The DVD is a Christian themed ‘comedy’ that involves the search of a dysfunctional family to discover who they really are. There is if you will; a search for meaning and purpose. On the surface, this is a great question for a movie theme. In Bringing Up Bobby the story involves a family who has been orphaned and is after some 12 years now going through a estate settlement as to who gets what from the estate. In the process, long lost relatives show up wanting their share of whatever from the estate. Thrown in for good measure are a sort of love story or two and a great deal of intended slap stick.

One of the troubling aspects of this movie is the cast actually shows a lot of potential. There are moments this largely unknown cast are quite good in their roles. This is troubling for various reasons, while the script and story had potential, the direction and story clearly falls short and there seems to be a lack of understanding to the real world surroundings. While there is an attempt to mirror aspects of the real world, it just doesn’t resemble the world I have lived in and experienced, and I have had many interactions with various population groups, including Goth’s as presented in the movie. Most of the time the slap stick just doesn’t work, and I didn’t even have a chuckle or two. Sadly, if watching this with friends, I may have found myself more embarrassed than entertained. There was the potential and possibility, but I found it offensive. This movie reminded me of a goofy youth pastor at a church, one who hasn’t lived in the real world, and one that isn’t that effective of reaching others outside of their faith.

In Bringing Up Bobby, we see the development of certain characters and their questions of faith and their discovery of who they are and what they believe. The search they are involved in just isn’t believable. There is one character that has a minor role that is somewhat thought provoking. Adam Misenko plays the part of Eric and brings some reality to the story. Eric lives in a troubled home, is in search for family and is a Goth. This subplot is interesting and thought provoking, unfortunately, his story doesn’t make for a comedy, and the tragedy of his experience detracts from the intent and style of the movie. While there are some good scenes involving his character explored in the film, the real strength of this storyline just isn’t explored in a satisfactory way.

The questions raised in Bringing Up Bobby are appropriate questions, that could have had real humor mixed into the story. How does one discover who they really are? How does one find meaning? How and why does family take advantage of family? What does it mean to be honest and love one another? All are adequate themes and while there is some minor exploration of this, the plot just isn’t well developed. We do see an honest portrayal of the search in the character of Nick. He is a representation that for some, no matter how wonderful we think our faith may be; there are those who live in and have tough and difficult lives. We do see the sacrifice of love portrayed by Bobby and his older brother James. It is just too little too late to make a real difference for where Nick is at.

I respect the intent of the makers to make a movie like this. I didn’t like it though, in fact, it may be one of the worst movies I have seen in a very long time. I am not the only one though, the ratings at IMDB is consistent with what I would rate this movie. When having a cast with the potential as this cast did, there needed to be more attention dedicated to the telling of the story. I would have preferred a serious subject matter dealing with the issues addressed, with a touch of comedic moments here and there, as opposed to the slap stick style I frankly just found offensive. Don’t get me wrong, I love good slap stick, I just don’t think this played well in this story. I do think there is potential in the makers of this movie; obviously I would say the casting of the film was quite good, as the discovery of a very good group of unknown actors is quite an accomplishment. Doing something with them that will translate in a real way would be appreciated.

The DVD does have a pretty good selection of items on the special features. There are some pretty good outtakes quite a bit funnier than the movie. I just don’t think I would have been happy with my purchase of this, no matter how good the outtakes and special features are. Will I watch a film from this group again? Quite likely the answer is yes, there is at least promise, promise I hope they develop, and hopefully with some of the same cast.

Old Dogs

Unfortunately some men have the reputation of being a dog, a metaphor that isn’t all that pleasurable and normally has negative connotations. With the release of the new movie Old Dogs starring Robin Williams and John Travolta that metaphor is taken to a new place. A place where we see the love a man can have for an old dog, but better yet, the love that can come about when one discovers family. Such is the case with Old Dogs, it has some rather nice things to say, in a fun and enjoyable way.

Old Dogs is a well directed, and put together film. There is a great sound track and we have exactly what we have come to expect with films involving John Travolta and Robin Williams. While Travolta is just a tad less than what we normally come to expect, Williams is once again at the top of the game, showing that not only is he a comedic genius, but quite a nice actor. There are the bit parts played by people like Seth Green, Kelly Preston, Bernie Mac, Matt Dillon and numerous others including Conner Rayburn and Ella Bleu Travolta, John Travolta’s daughter. While the story falls a little flat at times it is still a quite enjoyable movie with a cast of characters that provide some memorable experiences.

Old Dogs follows the exploits of long time friends, Charlie played by John Travolta and Dan, played by Robin Williams. These two have a life time of friendship and have grown up to have a business in sports marketing that is doing quite well. Over the years, these bachelors have had their moments, from two divorces in a 24 hour period for Dan, to the popular womanizing by Charlie. The two are in a time of their life where they have the opportunity to sign a 40 plus million dollar deal with some Japanese investors. They along with coworker Ralph White, played to the hilt by Seth Green come across a road block just as Dan decides to touch base with an old flame. After a number of years of not seeing this person, he comes to realize that he has fathered two children, twins, with one of the women he has thought of often. Suddenly he is forced to take two weeks of his life to care for his children and in the process, he not only learns about being a father, but about real friendship.

While many will notice the storyline involving Dan becoming a father, there was another storyline which I really appreciated, that shown of the friendship between Dan and Charlie. We see this portrayed quite nicely when Charlie looses the love of his life. We see a friend be a friend and for guys, to have a real friendship displayed on screen is something quite nice. To see it played in the way it is here is not only nice, it is rare. Men need friendships but are quite often, due to societal expectations among other things, void of those friendships. The stereotypes are played out in the film but we see a friendship that goes beyond those stereotypes. We see a friendship that has men having friends in a loving and caring way. Many men will see this portrayed on screen and desire the same type of relationship.

Of course this isn’t the only theme played out in the movie; we also see the realization and epiphany on the importance of family and responsibility. The relationship that takes place between Dan and his children, Zach and Emily is nice to see. We see and understand the importance of a father being a father and putting his children in their proper place of respect. This may mean less work, sacrifice, and changing schedules, but Dan ultimately comes to realize that it is the children who, even within a two week time frame teach him the important lessons of life. It isn’t money, it isn’t vocation, ultimate responsibility, and ultimate meaning for a father is to become a father. In a world where so many fathers fail, we also see a wonderful representation that even in a short time; we can all correct the mistakes of our past.

This isn’t a great movie, but it is a very good and enjoyable movie that many families will enjoy seeing together. You will laugh and you will think about the characters played out on screen. I also appreciated the cameo roles in the film, from Ann-Margaret to the late Bernie Mac, there are a number of fun, touching moments. Don’t get me wrong, while there are plenty of laughs, there are also plenty of meaningful moments. I think it is one of the reasons this movie plays out so well. While this isn’t an ‘Award’ winning film, outside of maybe recognition for the appropriate father and friendship roles portrayed, it is a film that is a fun watch. Old Dogs is not the best movie Williams and Travolta have done, but it is still quite enjoyable and one I think most people, especially fathers and men will enjoy along with their family. It isn’t often that this type of presentation occurs showing the love of a father, and the deep friendship among men, but this is a good one. It is one I am glad I saw, and one I think most people will enjoy.

On a scale of 1 – 10, take away those three amigos, Dan, Charlie and Ralph, we still have a pretty fun presentation on screen, an enjoyable 7
