The Disney Company has been around for quite a few years now, entertaining and providing memories for families all during those years. Tangled is the Disney Companies 50th animated film. The ever popular children’s story of Rapunzel is brought to the screen to entertain children of all ages. While an earlier desire by Walt Disney himself, it took years to finally adapt the story and bring a product to the screen the company would be proud of. Recently released on Blu-Ray DVD, fans of the movie, called Tanglers, will be able to watch the retelling of this fairy-tale over, and over, and over again, all along the way, picking up themes that touch on a variety of topics which are in part responsible for making this long standing fairy-tale a worthwhile viewing from a long-time family favorite Disney, as only Disney could tell.
There are times I watch movies on Blu-Ray and I ask myself; ‘what in the world did I just waste that extra money for?’ Then there are other times where I say; ‘Wow!’ The Blu-Ray rendering of Tangled is one of those ‘Wow!’ times. This beautifully told story is enjoyable and well worth the extra cost of the Blu-Ray rendering. Disney has a reputation of developing and producing quality films, and while there have been a few lack luster efforts over the years, we see more times than not, images like we see produced on Tangled. Not only are the images stunning, we see a wonderfully directed film with a strong emphasis on story, lesson, and morality. Mixed in the script are complex aspects of love, hope, and the magic of discovering ones self. Directors Nathan Greno, and Byron Howard have given us a story that can not only be enjoyed by children, but their adults watching alongside.
In Tangled we see an infant child, Rapunzel kidnapped by Gothel a prideful, vain woman seeking to remain young. It so happens that while Rapunzel’s birth mother was pregnant, she had some health complications of which a magic flower in the area provided healing and youth. Rapunzel has the magic power available after her birth in her hair. After 18 years of captivity, Rapunzel, voiced by Mandy Moore, thinks Gothel is her mother, albeit she is held in a tower of refuge which is more of a prison than a home. Rapunzel, unaware of the negative attributes involving her surroundings and situations though is also unaware of the opportunities that are available on the outside of the tower walls.
As with most Disney stories there is also a love interest, and what would the story of a young princes be without the hope of a possible prince? Along comes Flynn Rider, voiced by Zachary Levi. Rider is an opportunistic young man who has dreams, but the acquisition of his dreams often times involves his involvement with some unsavory characters, leading him to acts of crime and at times, desperation. In his escape from the theft of a princess crown he comes into contact with young Repunzel as he is trying to escape capture by both authorities in the kingdom and some of his criminal cohorts. Over the course of time, Flynn and Repunzel go on a quest together, love blossoms and we see the characters develop in a way that while viewed in animation form is still understood and appreciated by the viewer. The characters develop in an entertaining and thought provoking way. Disney in its magic provides ample, fun characters and situations that keep the story fun, while at the same time, informative and with value.
There are so many themes in Tangled one could pick up on, from the persistence of loved ones in trying to rediscover family, to the abuse and misuse of human beings. I was touched on the concept of never giving up on hope, despite the tremendous difficulties a person may face. Throughout the film we see Repunzel come face to face with tremendous obstacles. She dreams of seeing the flying, or floating lanterns that fly each year on her birthday. She doesn’t know what it is that causes this phenomenon, (actually her mother and father, and the kingdom they rule fly’s paper lanterns each year.) All Repunzel knows is that she really wants to see this in person, up close, rather than from the window of the tower. She has a dream, a desire, to do something that comes from within, she doesn’t know why. Of course we know the story while watching, but it is still told in such a beautiful way that the viewer will appreciate the telling. I was inspired by her willingness to go after her dreams.
There is also the idea that God will send others along the way to assist in situations that may seem at times, impossible. Those individuals often times also helps in the discovery of dreams. Sometimes, those used to help one accomplish those dreams may not seem like the likely, or even best choice, yet we can find hope, and help from those we least expect. Sometimes, in their talents, we have the very tools we needed to get the things God has for us. In a world where it seems we are often encouraged to make evaluations on people due to their circumstance, we see a story where on the surface, even the least desirable, has the potential to help us, if we only give them a chance. Repunzel in her innocence hasn’t learned those lessons or obstacles, yet, she is willing to give chances to those who are willing to help. While many may be concerned as to the influence those less than desirable characters can have on their life, we see through Repunzel a person who is light in darkness. It is her bright and shining light that penetrates the characters around her and thus, changes them.
Tangled isn’t the best Disney Movie of all time, but it is in the top tier, possibly top ten Disney Animated movies. It is fun, entertaining, and thought provoking. There are reasons many enjoyed this movie in theaters and good reasons it will be around for some time. Word on the street is, and from Disney, they won’t make any more Princess movies. I think that is a mistake, they have done such a good job at providing appropriate role models for young ladies, from which older men like myself can learn, appreciate, and want to share with a daughter or granddaughter. I for one hope they reconsider their decision.
As to the DVD, it is a good product with excellent transfer quality. I did find the navigation of the special features difficult and while there are some good special features on the DVD, especially the Tangled Teasers, I was somewhat disappointed in the overall features, due again, largely to the difficulty of navigation. I was pleased the package includes both the Blu-Ray and a standard DVD disc which can be played on standard players. Like most Disney Animated films, Tangled is worth more than renting, it is worth owning. Its story will be enjoyed and appreciated for years to come, from the oldest, to the youngest in the family.

Teenage Paparazzo
Adrian Grenier is one of the stars on the HBO television series, Entourage. It is kind of ironic, in the film he plays the part of a star that is stalked by the paparazzi. In real life he has become an individual whose real life mirrors the life of the character he plays in Entourage. One night while he was out on the town Grenier noticed a kid taking his photo in the barrage of paparazzi. The kid, a 13-year-old named Austin Visschedyk was the youngest paparazzi Grenier had come into contact with so goes out of his way to get to know the kid and it was here the inspiration for the HBO Documentary was born. The documentary, a 2010 Sundance Film Festival selection is sure to turn heads, and get people thinking about stardom and those who take their photographs. Paparazzo the documentary is more than that though; it is a pleasant surprise that got me to thinking about a number of things; something a good documentary should do.
Grenier does an excellent job at directing Paparazzo. The story is told in such a way it flows naturally. The story is weaved together in such a real way that we follow the journey of not just Visschedyk, but also in Grenier in getting to know and understand the paparazzi. There is a respect given that is somewhat unexpected, especially from someone who has had to endure the flash of cameras. Grenier is fair in his presentation of all sides of the story. He weaves in a number of interviews with celebrities who have had to endure more than most could imagine, among those are Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton.
As Paparazzo progresses it becomes more than just a story about the paparazzi though, (specifically the 13 year-old Visschedyk) it becomes a road journey type of film where Grenier develops a friendship with Visschedyk. We see Grenier start to care about the future of young Visschedyk, his safety, dreams, and aspirations. He ultimately realizes the two are using each other to accomplish something for themselves. In the reality and hope of real friendship more is required than using each other.
At the first of the film, we see a young awe inspired Visscheyk doing something he loves, we see the lack of involvement in parenting from his parents, especially his mother who seems to run the show. From being out at 3 AM to his usage of language and dictating where they will eat at, it is apparent that Visscheyk has lacked some level of control in his life. As the friendship between Grenier and Visscheyk develops we see Grenier start to recognize this. In the process we see Visscheyk start to develop even poorer habits and in the process, many of those around him, and the experts, start to have some level of concern for his future. There is the realization that he is a hot commodity now because of his age more than the quality of his photographs, (not that his photographs are bad), but he is getting opportunities because he is young, and according to some, ‘sexy.’ Grenier has a tool though to help in getting Visscheyk to see himself as others will and have. It is here that we see Paparazzo become more than a documentary; it becomes real life, especially for those involved in the filming of the documentary.
There are a number of things about Paparazzo that I liked, among those is the need to serve others, and of each of us going beyond using someone for ones own self. There comes a time when real friends realize the importance of being honest, sincere, and care for each other, even to the point of sharing things the other may not like. There is also the role of family. When do parents take charge and accept the responsibility of not being a friend or buddy to their child, (especially a 13-year-old) and start being a parent? We see the need to set guidelines, boundaries, and insuring that your child is in safe situations. Loving is not always about doing what is fun, sometimes loving each other is about doing what is hard, going out of the way to do more, be more, and share in life. I was reminded of the Bible verse that states, ‘No greater love has anyone than this; that they lay down their life for another.’ One of the sad concepts in Paparazzo is that fewer and fewer people understand the concept of befriending, or loving others to the point of self sacrifice.
I liked Paparazzo; I was captivated by the story and appreciated the authenticity of how the story was told. I also appreciated the research presented regarding the desire of many to be ‘famous’ and the dangers of what occur within society with this attitude. When we ignore the reality of what is happening in the minds of Western, or American culture we end up with a society that ultimately becomes unfulfilling. There are a number of outtakes on the DVD that are worth watching. One in particular has Grenier and Visscheyk riding in the back of the car speaking of spiritual things. One brings up if the other has ever read the bible; another says how they liked the Message Version of the Bible. When Visscheyk admits that he has read it a few times, he has never really lived it or practiced it. Of course to his defense he also admits he has never read his camera’s operation manual. He just pushes buttons and tries things until he figures it out. When watching this I couldn’t help but think that is how many approach life, we just go along trying things out. Unfortunately if Visscheyk ever read the operation manual for his camera he may get more out of it. In the same regard, if we would open up our Bibles and apply what it says we may also get more out of it. When one opens up the operations manual for a camera, they learn not just about taking better photos, but also about becoming better photographers, a photographer that can provide a future, a hope, a tomorrow that is more about doing for others than having done for you. On that point Paparazzo is a good documentary. One I hope has a decent audience, and one that will provide a DVD well worth watching, and well worth discussing.

Last Tango In Paris, Blu-ray
The Last Tango in Paris is a film that has raised eyebrows for over 35 years now. Marlon Brando was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor, Director Bernardo Bertolucci, nominated for a Best Director award would later win, like Brando Academy Awards for his respected category, and the actress Maria Schneider would have her life changed forever. It seems that as the years moved on that both Scheider and Brando would have all kinds of regrets for doing this film, even at times, expressing hate and resentment towards Bertolucci, saying he abused them, and manipulated the scenes in the movie which would help in many ways, bring about the sexual revolution and change the perspective of sexuality in movies. Last Tango in Paris was banned in many countries, and later on a subdued version was created to bring the X rated film down to an R rating to garnish potentially more viewers. The X version still garnished respect, or spoils from many around the world, for some branding it a work of genius, and for others, a tool to be used to perpetuate the religious argument against movies.
The Last Tango follows the sexual exploits between two unnamed individuals who find each other while looking at an apartment flat in Paris. The American, played by Brando has just lost his wife to suicide and the female, played by Schneider is working on a movie being filmed with her own love interest who wants to marry her. At first The Last Tango appears to be a sex filled movie intent on breaking barriers and taking us to places we may have never discovered on the movie screen. The acts of sex are explicit as is the nudity of actress Maria Schneider who would swear off ever doing nudity again after her experiences in this film which she would state later on, took her to a point where she would shed tears over some of the scenes filmed with Brando. In one rape scene, she would state that the tears shed in the scene were all too real. As the movie transpires, primarily through sex scenes, we see the development of the characters as we find out about them and their perversions. The characters develop in a snowball style throughout the movie with some tight direction, and unique perspective that mixes in the story with French in English subtitles, along with various scenes spoken in English. Even this transition of languages and subtitles, keeps the viewer glued to even the most difficult scenes to watch.
While there are aspects in filmmaking that are worthwhile, the subject matter is still difficult to watch, and appreciate. I had always wanted to see this movie but had never done so. The release of the Blu-ray DVD opened up the doors to watch what many consider one of the most influential films of all time. Unfortunately, the Blu-ray had little to anything to offer but more on that later.
While the story of The Last Tango in Paris is well known, I will assume, that many, like I, have not seen the movie. What I will say is this, all through the movie the lack of discovery in each others character is of key importance. It is only towards the conclusion of the film that the Brando character starts to share of his life in detail for various reasons. It is also here, that the dreams and illusions of the other character looses confidence in her experiences, and in the character played by Brando. This builds to a conclusion that may surprise many, but leaves an impact on the viewer despite what their position is of the explicit nature of the film.
There are many things many can take from this film despite its strong sexual content. One of the clear factors is the role of sex in relationship. While there will be, and has been, in part due to this movie, debate as to the appropriateness and place of sex, there is no denial of the role it plays in the development of relationship between the individuals involved in sexual activity with each other. There is also no doubt as to the harm and danger of unwanted and inappropriate sexual contact, not just in the abusive nature of sex, but in the relationship developed among those involved in the act together. In a brutal way, we see this happen in The Last Tango in Paris. We see sexual activity for the intent of self pleasure and for perverted reasons as opposed to the act of love. Yet, despite this, we also see the magnetic draw of relationship between individuals when sex is involved. Unfortunately, despite the desire to keep the act as a form of self serving pleasure, it does not take away from the feelings and emotions that develop. The Last Tango in Paris details that concept quite well. All too often, many may see the examples in The Last Tango in Paris as extreme. I challenge that while parts of it may be extreme, it is also in many ways more prevalent in today’s world than many either realize, or choose to accept. I would also challenge, the dangers and horrors that can come about are also just as possible today, as they are presented in this film. I am a part of a faith system that respects sex as an act of love. It is a beautiful gift to be respected and shared with one you love. In The Last Tango in Paris, we see a portrayal of what can happen when sex is encountered in a way outside of ultimate love.
I didn’t especially like The Last Tango in Paris. In fact, if not watching it for review purposes I would have turned it off. While it is still deserving of the now NC-17 rating, it is not the pornography that some have presented it to be. I am not saying it is not pornographic in various ways, but it certainly falls far from the ‘Porno’ category. I do think there are things to appreciate in the film. The acting by Brando is seeing one of our former masters at work. This is a film where, like his style or not, Bertolucci got things out of his actors that would impact them for the duration of their lives. While they didn’t say much positive about Bertolucci, his ability to get them to that place as an actor is quite noteworthy. That is not to condone, or destroy his work, it is just a notation.
I must also conclude with making a comment on this DVD in regards to purchase. Personally, I could in no way recommend the purchase of this product, but not because of the sexual content, but the aspect that the DVD Blu-ray concepts give absolutely no benefit to the purchase of this film in this format. The special features are practically non existent, the visual quality is not improved on at all, and the navigation system of the DVD is confusing and difficult to even find. In that regard, while some may appreciate the DVD itself, the Blu-ray version is in my opinion a total waste of money. As to the movie itself, despite the historical nature of the film, the accolades it has received, neither can I recommend it. I personally believe there are better films, dealing with the same subject, without the explicit sexual content. The scenes were disturbing enough for the actors involved for them to not recommend the film; I find it difficult to go against their wishes. Of course if looking to own a historical work, then maybe you want this as there is little to no doubt of the historical contributions this film made. As for me, I desire no last tangos with a temporary, non productive purpose. I prefer instead, relationships that last a lifetime, and for some, quite possibly, an eternity.

Walking on Water
Walking on Water is a new DVD release that will have surfers standing up and applauding. It is unusual in that it is a faith based film that has received praise from various sectors of the surfing community. The unique concept of the film has surfer Bryan Jennings, the founder of an organization Walking on Water, and the director of the film replicating a favor that was done for him when he was 14 years of age. Identify two youths who love surfing, and take them on a journey around the world to enjoy some of the best surfing sites on the planet. Walking on Water is a fun filled documentary adventure that has the two youths, Tyler Hallen and Luke Davis touring the world, and ultimately learning about the importance of serving others, and ultimately, faith. Along the journey they come across numerous world class and widely recognized surfers including, Al Merrick, Garrett Mcnamara, Cheyne Cottrell, C.J. Hobgood, Noah Snyder, C.T. Taylor, Damien Hobgood, Matt Beacham, Tom Curren, Jesse Hines, and Bethany Hamilton.
Even if one is not a fan of the sport of surfing, this DVD is a feast for the eyes. As a landlocked, water lover, (living in Kansas), the visuals of this movie had me coveting living near the water again. The athleticism is spectacular and the camera work to capture it is nothing short of outstanding. There is little doubt; the athletes we see on screen are in fact, world class. One of the really nice attributes about this film is that while it is a documentary if flows in a narrative form, keeping the interest of the viewer. The direction is outstanding and the story flows very nicely. There is a wonderful soundtrack and the viewer finds themselves drawn into the story, even the spiritual concepts which one may not be a part of. While the spirituality is real, it is presented in a respectful way that will not offend others, yet get it’s own point across, thus being entertaining to the non Christian, while also being challenging to the Christian to do more with their faith in regards to doing more.
As we see the young men, Tyler and Luke on their journey around the world we also see them start to care about those around them whom they come into contact with. We also see them learning from the more mature individuals who choose to be around them who love the sport and have excelled just as they desire to. We don’t see a lot regarding their personal belief systems but that is okay because they are young men yet developing their views. We do see enough growth to appreciate what they are going through. Jennings in his direction is wise to let us see a progression of these two young men, while at the same time, reminding us that they are young men. As a part of the journey, we also see them start to develop their worldview and the reality that a part of the faith they ultimately experience, is in based on relationship and service as opposed to sermons and judgment.
In many ways, Walking on Water is a spiritual journey that draws on the spiritual side of humanity, not just limited to the West but also recognizing the need of those around the world, especially the less fortunate. It is in the serving of the less fortunate the characters and viewers draw appreciation for the spiritual journey the characters are on. In many ways, the viewer may find themselves thinking about the concept of Jesus walking on the water. If thinking about the power that exists within each person, the viewer may see the possibility of themselves, in a figurative way, also walking on water. The allegory of doing the impossible is portrayed here in a positive, strong way through the medium of surfing, the perfect allegory for each of us, whether we surf or not, regarding walking on water.
I don’t know why I found myself liking this movie so much. It had far more religious overtones than I normally review, and it didn’t skimp on the message presented. I found myself thinking that everyone could get something out of Walking on Water, whether religious, spiritual, Christian or not. I especially loved the motivational section of the film featuring Bethany Hamilton, the young world class surfer who was attacked by a shark and lost her arm, only to relearn to surf with one arm and come back with a vengeance, becoming once again, a world class surfer. Her willingness to not give up on the thing she loved, plus her desire to help motivate and inspire others was inspirational. It is powerful enough that a movie on her life has also been made. Despite being rooted in faith principals, specific to Christianity, this story is told in a nonthreatening, yet non compromising way. The viewer will be challenged to do more and to contemplate the religious faith and spiritual perspectives presented. I can’t help but think this movie will reach many in the surfing community with the message of Christianity. I also expect that is a part of the intent.
For those who love surfing, this is a must own movie. For those not into the sport, it is definitely a worthwhile view, but a rental may be your first choice. There is a wonderful set of special features involved in the film worth watching. While I have never surfed, I would like to try it as I love the water and it is one of those things I have always wanted to try. It is a movie though that whether I surf or not, I have been challenged to find my own ways that I can walk on water. I suspect it will do the same for you.

The Wildest Dream, Following George Mallory
To the likely surprise of some I am a fan of nature films. Few do a better job at the production of them than National Geographic. They find ways to bring nature to the screen that is simply put, breathtaking. There is also their ability to tell mesmerizing story related to the images we see on screen. I recently had the opportunity to sit down and watch the screener for the DVD release of The Wildest Dream. The story looks at a potential reenactment of the climb of Mount Everest by George Mallory and his partner Andrew Irving, focusing primarily on Mallory. The images, combined with the story narration by Liam Neeson, and the following of Conrad Anker some 75 years after Mallory’s expedition in 1924 is nothing short of stunning. While the film was originally produced for the IMAX experience, it transfers over well to the television screen, but this is one that would be better served by Blu-ray technology and a large screen. It is hard enough to appreciate the images from the tallest mountain on the planet; to do so on a small screen would be like appreciating the images of the Grand Canyon thorough the viewing screen of a cell phone.
Many explorers believe evidence exist that shows that Mallory was the first person to climb Mount Everest. In 1924 the concept of doing this was rather amazing, especially when considering the clothing and equipment available. Equipment needed to provide oxygen and more. There is one section of the mountain called the Second Step which was considered at the time, the most difficult and most dangerous part of the climb. Since then a ladder has been installed to enable this part of the climb for modern day climbers. To climb this without the aid of modern equipment and the ladder was believed to be impossible, however, climber Conrad Anker along with Leo Houlding, a respected British climber decided to attempt the climb of the mountain in the same way, with the same equipment and clothing as would have been experienced by Mallory. The documentary not only shows the possibility of the climb but the likelihood that Mallory and his partner were in fact the first persons to top Everest. In the fullness of this documentary, we see the origins of the exploration, including the discovery of Mallory’s body the visual breathtaking images from the top of the world to the completion of Anker’s and Houlding’s attempt.
One of the things best known about Mallory is his quote regarding the reasoning for climbing Everest. The documentary justifiably brings out the shame that more people know the quote than they do the man who gave the quote. The quote as to why to climb Everest by Mallory was, ‘Because it’s there.’ This quote, this concept has been used for decades now as to the reasoning why the human spirit endures and strives to do more, or go beyond. Mallory some time after being asked the question responded in more detail with the following:
“The first question which you will ask and which I must try to answer is this, What is the use of climbing Mount Everest? and my answer must at once be, It is no use. There is not the slightest prospect of any gain whatsoever. Oh, we may learn a little about the behaviour of the human body at high altitudes, and possibly medical men may turn our observation to some account for the purposes of aviation. But otherwise nothing will come of it. We shall not bring back a single bit of gold or silver, not a gem, nor any coal or iron. We shall not find a single foot of earth that can be planted with crops to raise food. It's no use. So, if you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle is the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won't see why we go. What we get from this adventure is just sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life. We do not live to eat and make money. We eat and make money to be able to enjoy life. That is what life means and what life is for.” ~ George Mallory
As I read the comment by Mallory, I was reminded of the Bible verse that stated, The Joy of the Lord is my strength. There is something uniquely spiritual about the discovery of purpose, the ability to do something that you were created for. In that process to come to a place where you can experience the goodness and love of God is also a worthwhile venture. Mallory I think understood that in part. One possession he took with him to leave at the summit of Everest was a photograph of his wife whom he was deeply in love with. Most all of his items were found with the discovery of his body, except for the photograph which he stated he would leave at the top of the mountain. The last time he was visually seen was 800 feet from the top of the mountain climbing to the summit. Later when his body was discovered, some 75 years later, it was determined that he was on his way down from the mountain as his body was below the point of where it was last seen. Due to the lay of his body, it was clear he was in the decent, and that the hardest part of the climb was achieved once he had made it over what appeared to be the 2nd step of the climb. What was once thought impossible was later proven possible by the exhibition team retracing his steps. Mallory’s joy came in part from doing the impossible, he seemingly shared that moment with the person he loved the most, his wife, albeit she would never discover the reality of the fact that his body would be found without her photograph.
Mallory experienced more than the joy of accomplishing his dreams though, although he never shared those dreams with others, he likely got to see things that no man had ever seen before. The images provided by National Geographic show the majesty and beauty of God’s creation. The book of Romans says that God has revealed himself through nature. Without trying to get into the debate of creation vs. evolution, I don’t believe it possible to look at the majesty of the planet and not see a Divine Creator. A recent discussion with a PHD friend helped illustrate this point to me. While many think it takes faith to believe, which it does, he explained to me, that it takes faith and the lack of logical conclusion to look at certain attributes of creation and/or the human experience to not believe in God, and in fact, taking that belief not only requires faith, it requires a lack of wisdom and logic. We both came to the conclusion, it is more illogical to see the majesty of the planet, and the drive of the human spirit and believe in the concept of coincidence than it does to believe in the drive of the human spirit and reality of a God.
The Wildest Dream is an incredible film. I especially enjoyed viewing it after my reviews of recent of what seemed like incredible flops. There is an advantage of seeing a screener and there are disadvantages. The advantages are I get to see the copy of the film prior to release, or prior to final packaging and product finish. One of the disadvantages in the case of a DVD is it is short of the special features and other things which I like to review. I can say this for this film, even without the benefit of viewing the special features. With The Wildest Dream we have a special movie. There is a worthwhile, entertaining and educational story and images that go beyond description. It is a film worth not just watching, but a film worth owning. I challenge the viewer to watch, even if you have no interest in mountaineering, it will give you a respect for those who choose to go after dreams, and it will be a breathtaking experience with the images only few have ever experienced. Thank God for the development of technology that now provides that opportunity for all of us.

Siren
Siren is a movie that on the surface looks promising; there are even those wonderful reviews on the cover of the packaging that says how good it is. Those reviews wouldn’t lie would they? The movie follows a couple and their friend who decides to take a weekend trip on a rented yacht. They meet up with a local who tells them of one of the legends of the sea. They are told of an old legend involving Siren’s, female spirits who manipulate people towards them only to wreck their ships and create havoc. The shipmates leave on their trip and along the way pass by an island where they see a castaway stranded on the island. The castaway swims to the yacht from the island in a frantic fury. Not long after arrival to the yacht he dies. The friends on their weekend get away after deciding to go to the island to bury the stranger see a strange alluring, sexy female. After meeting her, things begin to happen and the temptress has more about her than one would imagine. That is at least the concept as portrayed by the press materials related to the DVD. Unfortunately, the praise, the description, just doesn’t mesh. What actually happens is a hodgepodge of garbage that is quite possibly the worst movie I have ever had to endure.
Siren looks at times like it was filmed on an old VHS camera by inexperienced cinematographers. While there are at times some beautiful shots, the reality that the filmmakers and cinematographers had some beautiful shots, while allowing the horrendous work, including at times cinematography only gives to the distain for this movie. Then there is the acting and what I call tease scenes. At times, Siren gives the impression that it wants to be a sexy, supernatural, paranormal horror story, unfortunately it fails on all levels. It isn’t scary, and while there are some supernatural, paranormal horror concepts to it, it is so bad that I am still facing confusion after watching this movie as to what it is about. It has one of the most confusing, horrendous scripts I have ever seen in a movie. While it wants to be sexy, and sultry, it is neither, it instead borders on torture.
Regarding the characters in this so called movie, there is essentially no development, outside of an apparent sex fantasy and the obvious perversions of the characters throughout the film. It is their perversions which ultimately lead to their demise but any development of character that one would appreciate would have been nice. How one could engage in a sex fantasy in the morning, meet up and take a yacht trip in the afternoon, then have someone swim to their boat, die, and a couple of hours later be partying and swimming, having sexual fantasies for a strange, unknown person the next moment is beyond me. There is a chance this could be like a number of other horrible films and become a cult phenomenon, but if that were to happen, I may have to quit going to movies.
While Siren is horrid in so many ways, there is a reminder that will hopefully hit home for some regarding there are consequences for actions. There is also the concept, that sex in and of itself can be dangerous. That said, I don’t accept the premise as presented in the movie. As a person of faith, who rejects the idea that sex is bad, I would have preferred that appropriate relationships, real love, would have been shown in some way. There is actually very little nudity in this movie so that wasn’t an issue, there are certainly sexual situations, but a lot is left to the imagination. It would have been nice to have characters that care for each other, that would have had an appreciation for themselves and others more than just the self serving pleasure presented. There is an underling message of the dangers of inappropriate sex, and while I am normally very forgiving of the direction and production of movies, I honestly felt everything about this movie was bad. I doubt they would have tried and give an appropriate message. That said; the film can still be used to illustrate the dangerous situations we put ourselves into and the need to make sure we get to know someone before throwing ourselves at them. The application of the passage from Ecclesiastes would also be wise to reflect on. There is a time and place for everything, when we are so self-serving that we care more about pleasing self first and foremost, then danger may be around the corner.
If you haven’t been able to tell by now, I hated this movie. The most horrific thing about it, which isn’t scary in any way, is that I had to endure and watch to the end. There isn’t that much positive to say about it, in fact I can find few things other than a few of the nice island scenes. I honestly can’t imagine others finding anything positive about it. If seeing it though, or knowing someone who has seen it, there is certainly the points I bring up that can lead to beneficial fruitful discussion regarding being self-serving, the appropriateness of sex, and how to take the time respond to each moment of life, whether dancing, laughter, mourning, or whatever in an appropriate way. The things, situations, and people around us, are often more important than the moments we think we will enjoy through self-worshiping attitudes.
I wish I could recommend Siren, but unfortunately, if someone was to give you a copy of this movie with no strings attached, I couldn’t recommend watching it; your time is worth something and I found this an almost total waste of time. I hope you don’t find out the hard way that it would be the same for you.

Step Off (AKA Battle)
In Sound Off we see the story of a hip hop music producer struggling to make ends meet and have his music accepted. With a serious chip on his shoulder there is hope in the future but he has reason to not have much confidence. True to the history of the music, and the heart of his music, Rippa has a lot to learn, thankfully along the way, despite his attitude, and the enemies he has made, he also has a few friends to watch his back. After being robbed of all of the tools of the trade, Rippa learns some valuable lessons as he seeks to win a regional contest that will help solve some of his problems, hopefully in the process; he will get the push he needs to have his music recognized and appreciated.
Step Off stars Conrad Clifton as Rippa. To say that Clifton stars in this movie is a sort of exaggeration as one would assume that there is serious acting taking place. Unfortunately, it is hard to take any of the technical components of this film seriously outside of the plot. There is a poor script to support the themes, and virtually everything else is weak, from the editing, to the lighting, and from the dialog to the cinematography. As hard as it is to think, in a movie with music as a background, even the music is weak, with the possible exception of the last 15 minutes and a few glimpses of potential. While there is at times promise, promises can be broken and all too often Step Off makes enduring, potentially positive promises, only to be broken. With so many promises and so much let down, are there positives? I think so, read on.
Step Off starts off following the struggles of Rippa, a producer with problems all around him. From producing for battles with his music, only to be beat out by more crowd pleasing musicians who likely have family in the audience to having school debt, child support payments due for a son, and on top of everything else, getting ripped off by having his music stolen and used by another producer and then being robbed of all the tools of his trade and having to depend on his friends to help him get by. His friends come through and while visiting a music store, looking at some old school music he comes across someone who helps him understand the purpose of music and how to listen to it to understand its heart. In the process, Rippa’s manager tries to help he has had to deal far too often with Rippa’s attitude. Rippa develops a relationship with a female film producer working on a documentary movie. The relationship develops and although it is poorly acted, is somewhat entertaining and contagious in having us understand the characters.
Music is a powerful, spiritual tool that can reach multitudes. We all have our own favorites, one of the things I have learned through my musical experience is an appreciation of most all styles, including hip hop and good beats. This movie helps show the struggles many musicians go through regarding egos and experiences. I am somewhat eclectic in my taste. One of the things I liked was seeing that each individual has their own struggles and that the ability to persevere is critical for each person. In my faith, the recognition that there is a spirit within me that enables me to be more is critical to my success. Others in my faith become like family, they help along the way to overcome. The character of Rippa, the things he has to endure, and the people along the way are similar. One has to find more within themselves to help them be more, and in the process, the friends one becomes close to helps you when the times are tough. In one scene after Rippa starts to recognize that he is producing good music, we see him looking over the city. The night scene is a reminder that in darkness, there can be light, but to bring light to darkness there has to be light within the individual. For many that brightness is a result of their faith, for Rippa, it is his music. His friends, faith and confidence in himself, and his music cause the light to illuminate even brighter to those around him.
Technically, I can’t say much good about Step Off. I have seen worse movies technically, but not many. It is truly sad to see a movie, a concept with so much potential go do dreadfully wrong. The story and plot has been portrayed many times; the back drop of music production is an interesting theme and concept that deserved better.
Despite having some interesting and decent special features on the DVD, I can’t recommend it. It would have been nice to see some decent production put into this movie, it could have had an audience that would have made it worthwhile. It is sad to see promise in something and then it to not deliver. Broken Promises can have irreparable harm. The culprits in Step Off aren’t quite there for me but many more broken promises will have me, refusing to watch empty promises again.
